I've followed this thread for some time hoping to simply fix the problems caused by SP2 (i've got xp pro). My problem is I can't use any of the excellent advice here because my system won't let me change the key, despite trying all the various programs mentioned that normally do this. It seems I am blocked in some way from changing the key. Any suggestions?
Uninstall sp2 from add remove programs
I wouldn't recommend installing XP SP1 without first changing your CD-KEY if yours is a Warez'ed copy.
run regedit, navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\WPAEvents\OOBEtimer
and change the value to: ca,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00 - this will delete your key and make your XP un-registered.
To RE-register a CORP XP PRO with a new CD-KEY, run: %systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a from START-> RUN, select the TELEPHONE option and hit NEXT, click on the CHANGE PRODUCT KEY button, enter the new CORP key, hit UPDATE, this will take you to the previous window, from there, just EXIT and REBOOT. Your SP1 and Windows Update will now work.
