Wincows XP RC1...What do you think?
« on: July 05, 2001, 08:48:03 AM »
I got it and installed it without any problems and I love it!  I had also gotten a copy of Beta 2 earlier in the year and for some reason it didn\'t sit too well with me.  I think it was the machine that I had installed it on.  But I installed RC1 on my home machine and it is just amazing.  I love the CD burning function in XP, it\'s not too much more than drag and drop!  And it even created a PPPoE connection for my DSL connection.  So far I am impressed.

What does everybody else think of RC1?

brew me a cup. we\'re here for the long haul
if at first you dont succeed, call it version 1.0

Love it, not a problem so far.  All my hardware works fine with it (well, haven\'t tried my HP 4200 scanner yet, but I\'m sure that\'ll work too).  The remote assistance feature seems to work pretty good too (just one or two minor problems).

I also installed Windows XP RC1 numerous times, with it I installed the following programs: Office XP, NAV2K1, Zone Alarm Pro 2.6.84, & AdSubtract Pro 2.11, now my problem, it reboots itself suddenly, with no warning, and no set time limit (ie. every 6hrs.. its sudden) and does it very often, does anyone know what may be causing this? any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Uninstall ZoneAlarm, use WinXP\'s built-in firewall until there\'s a fix.

Do you think that this will stop the reboots? Since then I have uninstalled XP and put w2k back on because these reboots became very irritating. I had no other problems with XP except the reboot issue, and I\'d like to go back to it as I would like a change from w2k. Thanks again for any info.

I had these random reboots too.  I noticed it happened more often when I started a program like mirc which needed to connect online.  I went in and told XP to not automatically reboot after a crash, so I could see the file causing the crash.  Found it, and tracked it down to ZoneAlarm.  As long as ZA wasn\'t running, I didn\'t have a single crash.

gotcha! I\'m gonna give it a try, I have one more thing to ask http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' /> the link on the homepage \"Make XP cd like w2k\" or something to that affect, I couldn\'t access that page, so I\'ll ask here, is there anyway to bypass the serial like in w2k (ie. setting the setupp.ini file to 000 instead of 270, or actually putting your XP serial in the PIDKEY section so it doesn\'t ask you during setup). Thanks for the info.

Where\'s the bad link at?  I checked but didn\'t see one.  Anyways, no there\'s not a way to keep it from asking for a serial right now.  You could do an unattended install, but you\'d have to put the files for that on a floppy.  I always like having everything I need on the CD, as I tend to lose floppies.  If I find a way to put it on the CD, I\'ll probably put that in the XP review we\'re working on.

Where is that option?
