desktop issues
« on: January 13, 2005, 11:54:58 AM »
I'm new, so if this is lacking some important information, please tell me to clarify.

My partner recently had issues with a virus on his PC -- the one where a blue screen comes up with the "Warning! Windows has detected spyware on your computer!" message.  I fixed that by removing three particular files, and the computer is working now.  However, one thing that remains is a white screen over the normal desktop.

The icons are visible, and there aren't issues using any of the programs, but it's really annoying.  The screen is white, but changes to gray when you move the cursor around.

Left clicking on it, it's linked to a particular file: windows/web/desktop.html, but when I search for the file (it's hidden) and delete it, it comes back on reboot.  (And it never actually ends up in the recycle bin when I delete it).

Any suggestions?  Be kind with me: I don't know my way around PC's very well - I use a Mac - and I'm at the end of my knowledge, here.

Thanks,
Alyssa

Hi Alyssa, a Registry fix is all that may be needed

When editing the Registry it may be a good idea beforehand, if running Windows XP or Me to Create a new Restore point before hand

Go To START>>All Programs>>Accessories>>System Tools>>System Restore
Click Create a Restore point
Name it and click Create

When that's done

Open Registry Editor. Click Start>Run, type REGEDIT, then press Enter.
# In the left panel, left click on and expand(+) the following
+HKEY_CURRENT_USER
+Software
+Microsoft
+Internet Explorer
+Desktop
+Components
# Still in the left panel, locate and Right click on and delete the subkey:
0
# Close Registry Editor.

Restart the computer

When your back in Windows it may be a good idea that we have a closer look to ensure no other malware is hiding on the computer
As you know, Windows is a little more vunerable than Mac's OS
With some preventive tools we can help stop these attacks

Can you Download Hijackthis 1.99
A small utility to help identify if any Hijackers, Malware, Spyware, etc.....Reside on your computer

Important: Create a Permanent folder for Hijackthis
Double Click "MY Computer"
Open your C: drive
Click "File" >>> "New" >>>> "Folder"
A new folder will be created, name it HJT

Now you will have C:\HJT

Download Hijackthis from CLICK HERE or CLICK HERE
Save it to that new folder

Do a SCAN and Save a Log file---Save the log----copy and paste the WHOLE contents of the log  here... Don't try and fix anything yet----It is all important
