win98 after win2k problem!
« on: August 02, 2001, 06:15:52 PM »
hi,
i have a dual boot system with win98 and win2000 pro.I am currently using the two till i fully discard win98 and only use win2000 pro when i get real familiar with its workings. Now my win98 system is quite unstable and i want to reinstall win98.when i tried to do so, as i usually do, the first part goes okay of setup in which Windows copy files, but after a Restart to complete the installation and befort detecting and configuring hardware in my computer, the pc strangely SHUTS DOWN altogether.and now when i power on the pc it recovers the registry from a  backup and  and the win98 system is not properly configured and still as it was unstable and faulty.

Can anyone help me out with solution...
thanks

I\'m surprised you got as far as you did...you\'re going to have to recover the w2k bootloader, hopefully you have your recovery console installed as a choice with 2000, the best way to go about this is...boot from the w2k boots disks..the four floppies...when you reach the screen windows 2000 professional setup....press R to repair the installation...(you did make an emergency repair disk in w2k by going to backup....make emergency repair disk didn\'t you)...the screen that comes up next press c or r..either should do it.

to use the recovery console...type in your admin password..at the prompt type  fixboot  to replace the boot sector and then type exit and reboot.
