Athlon 1.4 Insanity

Hi All,

I have a real puzzler. My system is as follows:
Asus A7V266 DDR Mobo
AMD Athlon 1.4Ghz
512Mb DDR 2100 Ram
41 Gb IBM Deskstar
Asus V8200 64Mb Geforce3 Pure
Soundblaster live 5.1
Hayes V.92 Modem
Hi Quality 300w PSU

The problem is that the system runs absolutely fine under Win ME. That is until you start any 3d Game. It either locks after 10 - 15mins or  immediately after starting the game.
I have changed PSU once and tried changing soundcard and videocard to see if they caused the problem but it still exists.

If you have any ideas, I am at my wits end with it!

Cheers

I have now discovered that if I run the pc from cold it will run 3d apps for about 30mins before locking up, which led me to beleive that it could be the processor overheating, although the hardware monitor still reads ok at 67 degrees.

Any ideas?

I haven\'t tried that yet, only because Ithey have gone on from a clean installation, so I don\'t think mine\'s not video related either unfortunately.

Let me know when you post, I\'ll get the kettle on!

67 degrees cpu temperature, you have got to be joking.
At idle mine runs at 27 degrees, and at full load 44 degrees.
You will need to cool it down to stop it freezing

Mines definately overheating, so I\'m just going round with my collection box to raise the needed funds. Until then I\'ll just continue to run it at 1050mhz instead of 1400mhz. I hope to get an aluminium case with fans galore and a beast of a chip fan.

Hopefully I\'ll be sorted in the next month or so.

Thanks for the help

1.4\'s overheat something chronic. I work in a PC store, and we have lots of trouble witht them. Try the following:
1. Make sure your video card has plenty of room
2. Put your SB Live in any odd numbered PCI slot (but not number 1, its too close the the video card). I know this sounds wierd but hey, trust me.
3. Take the side panels off. This allows better air flow
4. Get a deacent fan. By deacent, I mean you\'re spending at least AU$50
5. Get a copy of ZD\'s Winbench, and also the PC Probe thats on your ASUS motherboard CD. Then set it to alarm at 58 degrees celsius, and run Winbench. See how long it takes to overheat.

If its not a heat problem, I dunno. But its my experience that Athlon 1.4s are bastards when it comes to heat

I have already done most of what you\'re suggesting and it\'s still hot.

I am currently waiting for a new CoolerMaster Case, 7200rpm chip fan and enermax power supply to arrive, This should hopefully cure my ills.

Thanks for the input anyway.
