cdrw instal problem
« on: September 29, 2001, 03:58:25 PM »
Greetings all... I hope someone here can help me.

Just installed a liteon 12x cdrw in my Aptiva running win98. This one drive shows up in explorer as *8* individual ide devices... No amount of firmware upgrading or master/slave/jumper switching seems to help... and there is no BIOS update for this board (my suspected problem)

Any ideas?
thanks.

Seems to be that time where a reinstall of Windows would be good.
However, some dont have that option, so download and install all new drivers for your computer > display, sound, modem, chipset, nic, raid, etc. Anything that uses a driver. (VIA 4in1, etc)
Reboot into safe mode. GO into device manager and remove all IDE devices (hard drives/CDROM/CDRW/Zip). Reboot. If this doesnt work, reboot to Safe mode and and delete your IDE channels. Reboot.

Have you been playing with TweakUI?

All I can say is, wow.  I have not seen this problem or heard of it.  I have heard of the disappearing drive before (not seen it, but heard alot about it) but never one drive turning into eight.

Hey, you can just send me the seven spares you don\'t want .  Let us know how you got it fixed, if none of us are able to figure it out first.

As a matter of fact, I have used TweakUI in the past... But as far as drivers, I\'m tip top... (I\'m kinda obsessive about that stuff)... and I tried the IDE clean-out from Safemode trick too... I\'m \"this close\" to buying a new system from my boss...

I had this problem several years ago in win 95 I think , and I resolved in the device manager cdroms by changing appointed drive letters d - x in d: to d or d-e  if you have two cdrom .
If this doesn\'t work :
go to the registry FIND
All the fake drives one after another and delete
example :  F: then G: a.s.o
When you delete check if it concerns cdroms .

As far as sending out the 7 spares, two are already spoken for by friends and the rest I\'ll prolly sell on E-bay http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />

Well... it\'s fixed. Wanna know how?! I built a new system with the MSI 694D Pro mobo and a coupla crazy over clocked celerons... now I have the cdrw and a highly \"mod\"able machine too boot!

I\'m givin the old system to my parents... it\'ll take them into the next century with no further upgrades.

Thanks for trying anyway...
