Command prompt won't open
« on: November 21, 2005, 04:13:48 PM »
I am just getting my computer back to normal thanks to guestsolo but now i've noticed that i cannot open the command prompt.  Everytime I try a message appears:
"16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem
c:\windows\systme32\command.com
c:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and microsoft windows applications.  Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.

close        ignore"

I am not trying to run any applications, all I want to do is open the command prompt.

thanks for any help

Can you do the following
If you have Windows XP Pro
Download this fix, save it too desktop and double click on it
Let it self extract too the system32 folder
 http://homepage.ntlworld.com/spencer.greys.../XPProfiles.exe

If your operating system is Windows XP Home click on this link.
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/spencer.greys...XPHomeFiles.exe

If your unsure if your running Home or Pro
Go to start>>run>>type in winver
Hit OK

Reboot the computer and let me know how things are running

It opens now, but when i try to close it a message appears:
"End Program - C:\Windows\system3...

Windows cannot end this program.  It may need more time complete an operation.

To return to Windows and check the status of the program, click cancel.

If you choose to end the program immediately, you will lose any unsaved data.  To end the program now, click End Now.

End Now        Cancel

This appears if I try to close the prompt immediately after opening but not doing anything, or if I let the prompt stay open for a while without doing anything it still shows this message when I try to close it.  But it does open now.

How are you opening the command prompt?

Are you going to START>>programs>>accesories>>Command prompt?

Are are you going to START>>RUN>>type in cmd
or are you going to START>>RUN>>type in command

I would guess the latter
When done, at the prompt type exit Then hit Enter on your keyboard

thanks stupid mistake.  I've just been having weird problems here and there.  A few days ago my ac adapter for my laptop stopped chargingmy battery, it started working all of a sudden and then my built in wireless stopped connecting to the internet although it would connect to the router.  I appreciate all the help.

i was also going to ask you why the "hkcu ........... blank.html" entry in hijackthis keeps coming back.  I keep selecting to fix the entry but it comes back.  I just fixed the entry but if you would like I will post a new hijackthis log.
