Perhaps an error in the office installation ,or on the installation cd .Can you go to the safe mode and uninstall office 2000 (ctrl or f8), and try again ,as after installing aol 6.0 you could enter winme to install office 2000 .If it\'s impossible to uninstall office 2000 , you can try to delete the driver or file that gives you the fatal error , but if this doesn\'t help you have to try to reinstall in the same directory . If this doesn\'t help either , make a clean install .
Good luck

Thanks for that info, but it is not just the office install, i am doing this for a friend, on his gateway, after i did the install for him when he took it home, and tried to load aol upon the reboot he got the halted ptvcd error so isugessted to him to uninstall aol which he did but still could not boot up, so i got the system back and tried everything, reinstalled clean, from format windows worked fine i installed aol 6.0 same thing happened, not even the same disk so I know that the disk is not the problem tried a system restore, selective start up through msconfig , reloaded clean again this time i tried it with office 2000 upon restart same thing happened same error message,  clean install again works fine for now nothing else installed.  What is the device? that is failing, i think it is video what can i do to install other programs

PTVCD.VXD  is a modem virtual device driver. Follow the instructions below .
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/ar...s/q296/2/40.asp
You know what causes the error now .
I hope you can enter the safe mode and follow the instructions . If this isn\'t possible simply rename the vxd into something else in Dos and try again to enter  in the safe mode ,or try the normal mode if it works and continue with the instructions after renaming the ptvcd.vxd again to his original name in order to eventually be able to uninstall the modem
Good luck
