So you want to make millions? Let me teach you the basics of Merchanting:IntroductionMerchanting is a skill in it’s own way. Either you have the skill, or you don’t. It is the skill of simply buying low, selling high. It can get more complex though, a truly successful merchant needs to keep up with street prices, know how fast items can skyrocket or plummet in price. You need to know the basics of the economy to be a good merchant, meaning that if you’ve come straight off tutorial island, you wont be a very successful merchant, although, you can still merchant.
Here are some dictionary definitions to help get you started:
Merchant: A person who sells goods or services. A member of the middle class in most societies
Economy: a system of producing, distributing, and consuming wealth.
So as you know, merchanting can’t be that easy. That’s why I’m here. I want to sum it up and MAKE it easy.
There are different types of merchanting, mainly 4.
There’s the
normal merchanting where one buys an item for a certain price, and sells it for a higher price, such as when you buy a Dragon Longsword for 75k, and sell it for 100k.
There’s the
skill merchanting, while you train a certain skill. A good example would be when you buy supplies for yew longbows, make nature runes, and alchemize them for a profit. You are increasing Magic, Fletching and Runecrafting.
There’s also
converting. This is where you buy an item and make it something else to increase skills AND profit. A good example would be buying steel bars; and making cannonballs.
Lastly, there’s a
business. This is when a merchant hires people to do labor for them, such as mining ore, which is then given to the merchant, to give to another bunch of people, who then smelt the ore into bars, and give to the merchant. The merchant then makes use of the bars by fletching them into arrowheads, or making cannonballs. Since the merchant bought in bulk, it was cheaper, saving him enough money to pay for the smithing.
In this guide, I’m going to teach you the dos and don’ts of merchanting; give some info on price guides, gather resources from other sources and add it to here, and give a little what to merchant at what stages thing. Please be sure to check back later for additional info, and add some of your own if you want!
Dos and Don’ts of merchanting:Do wear an outfit to icon your sales, such as full Mimes if you’re selling rares, a Prince Tunic and Leggings if selling arrows, bows and logs, and a Camo shirt and legs if you’re selling combat related stuff.
Don’t wear any form of Treasure Trail armor, hats or boots when merchanting. This turns the customers away.
Do buy in bulk, this way, you get cheaper deals, and more profit.
Don’t fraternize with the Evil Chicken.
Do change worlds every 10 minutes if you think you’re not getting enough trades.
Don’t wear your products.
Do take breaks to avoid boredom.
Don’t think you shouldn’t check the price guide once a day.
Do have fun! Everybody likes a happy person; this gives you a good reputation! (Merchants with good rep get good sales)
Price Guides:
Choose a suitable price guide for your needs, or make your own, if you can cope with it. I advise the
Zybez Marketing Price Guide; as well as the
RuneScape Official Forums in the marketplace section, and any other RS2 forum you can find with a marketplace.
A good merchant can keep up with prices without knowing these guides. If you can achieve this, you might be the next richest Scaper.
If you manage to make your own, well done, but you’re going to have to update it EVERY DAY. I advise you don’t.

So, on with it. (Prices of items are not included, because they get outdated. Please check price guides for this info).
0GP – 60KSo, you don’t have any money, you don’t want to fight, I suggest you go to Lumbridge. Here, you can make enough money till 60K. Go to the cow fields, and people will have left some cowhides on the floor. Pick up a full inventory of these, run to the Lumbridge castle, go to the stairs, climb to the very top, and you should be at a bank. Repeat this until you have 600 cowhides (In a populated f2p server, this shouldn’t take too long). Once you’re done with that, go to Al-Kharid, head to the bank, and then sell your cowhides for 100GP each. That should get you 60k.
60K – 100KGo to a world like world 3 or 4. Head to the chicken coop in Lumbridge, and yell out “Buying ALL feathers 6gpea!†Some nubs will trade you, just keep doing it until you have 10 000 feathers. Sounds like a lot, but you will make a 40-50k profit by selling them 10GP each to a member.
100K – 500KI advise merchanting runes at this stage. Start buying lots of elemental ones, like airs. Also buy minds, but at the LOWEST price possible. After you reach 250K, you can switch to Chaos and Death runes. Do this until 500k.
500K – 800KAt this stage, I advise you become a member, if not, merchant Rune armor. If you are a member, merchant Rune armor and Obsidian Capes.
800K – 1500KStill Rune armor and Obsidian capes, but also Obsidian shields and Trimmed Robes, Trimmed Green Dragonhide, and Trimmed armor until Adamant (G)
1500K – 2000KAll of the above, plus Rune (T) and (G), Magic logs, Blood runes, Dragon meds and Dragon skirts.
2000K – 3000KAll of the above, plus Obsidian Mauls and Torn Pages. Maybe a few boaters and heraldic shields.
3000K – 6000KAll of the above, plus Ranger + Wizard’s boots, Robin Hood hats, Cavaliers and God Armors.
6000K – 10MAll of the above, plus Prayer and Super Restore Potions and Super Sets.
10M – 28MAll of the above.
28M – 45MAll of the above, plus Santa Hats.
45M – 100MAll of the above, plus Rune Arrows (Bought in bulk amounts of 8K+ and sold in amounts of 1K+)
100M+All of the above, plus Purple, Red, and Blue Party Hats.
