If you have the w2k pro cd , why don\'t you install  directly from the cd , saves a lot of problems . If the cd is defective how did you get the copy on your computer .Perhaps your cdrom must be cleaned , or replaced .

I did install from the cd. All the files are copied as needed. Then the computer restarts and tells me to put in the w2k pro cd. Even though the cd is already in the drive it tells me to insert cd labeled \"Windows 2k pro\".

The normal procedure is :
Insert w2k cdrom , start up from cdrom .
You get \"push any key to start from the cd \" what you did
The second time you leave the cdrom and restart , you get the same message
\"push any.......\" but this time you don\'t
and normally the w2k setup starts .
With you the computer asks to insert the w2k cdrom . Very odd , the cdrom isn\' found by the installation , after resetting .

What\'s your configuration , is it w2k compatible .Is the cdrom master or slave and on which ide slot  , why doen\'t w2k doesn\'t find t or recognize it ??

Try copying the CD to the hard drive and installing from the hard drive

what\'s the letter assignment of you CD Drive, I know on some earlier versions the setup programs will default to D so if there is more than one HDD and the CD drive is E or above you may need to specify the CD Drive, I haven\'t seen this on Win2k but I\'ve seen it on all earlier versions.

ok please tell exacly what is going on here, my best guess is that you started an in-place upgrade on the system. ie put in the cd and told to upgrade. then it restarted and went through text mode setup just fine. but now no cd rom drive, or getting a missing NT5inf.cat

well if you would do a quick look at the online microsoft KB you would find the answer, but here it is IF this is your problem.

when you get the missing nt5inf.cat error press shift + F10 -- your at a command prompt %systemroot%system32 good
cd drivers
ren cdudf.sys cdudf.sys.old
restart the system

rename the file back when your up in the OS,

PS adaptec easy cd creator will cause these types of weird issues all the time, uninststall adaptec and never use it again!
