System32 is empty, is this fixable?
« on: June 28, 2007, 08:58:38 AM »
A couple of days ago I noticed that my computer was running slow, then that the internet was too. Then the next day when I loaded up my computer I was given a message about SpOrder.dll missing from C:\system32, so I looked in system 32 and it was completely empty, no files or folders, nothing!. I thought that maybe it was a virus or trojan that had caused it so did a virus scan with McAfee which found nothing. All my normal files are there, and now I cannot access the internet at all. I read around on the site and found nothing, but did see that you ask everyone for a HijackThis report, so I downloaded it and put it onto my computer and heres the report that it gave me.

(Also I did the report without my two extra external hard drives plugged in because i thought if it was a virus I didnt want them to be more effected as they have important files on them, and i unplugged the wirless router so if i was a virus that wouldnt be affected either)

Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1

System32 is empty, is this fixable?
« Reply #1 on: June 28, 2007, 06:42:21 PM »
It's looks as if you have been doing some cleaning on this machine

Let's see if we can get you back online with this computer then do some more cleaning

First
Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL =
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar =
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page =

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://searchbar.findthewebsiteyouneed.com

R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {B163D7B4-ECA4-4917-9EA4-11257A697403} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\hgghh.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {C47A9554-195A-4769-9B13-04F15B450A39} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\wvuurqn.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [iziw] C:\windows\stub_113_4_0_4_0.exe

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [PCShield] regsvr32 /s "C:\WINDOWS\System32\sfg.dll"

O16 - DPF: RaptisoftGameLoader - http://www.miniclip.com/haphazard/raptisoftgameloader.cab
O16 - DPF: {10000000-1000-0000-1000-000000000000} - file://C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\sbbymdgn.exe

O16 - DPF: {30528230-99f7-4bb4-88d8-fa1d4f56a2ab} (YInstStarter Class) - C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Common\yinsthelper.dll

O20 - Winlogon Notify: Extensions - C:\WINDOWS\system32\f0l0la3m1d.dll (file missing)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: hgghh - C:\WINDOWS\system32\hgghh.dll (file missing)

O20 - Winlogon Notify: wvuurqn - wvuurqn.dll (file missing)

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows
Including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Reboot your computer

Back in Windows
If your still not online, this line in your Hijackthis log is related to McAfee Security suite
O10 - Broken Internet access because of LSP provider 'c:\windows\system32\mclsp.dll' missing

You can't, and don't try fixing that line with Hijackthis
It appears corrupt and most likely preventing you from connecting
I suggest that you uninstall McAfee completely, reboot the computer
You can reinstall it later

If your still not online after doing the removal of McAfee
You will have to download this tool
Download LSPFix from this link
 http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
You will have to transfer from one computer to this one offline
Save it to the desktop
Close down all other open windows
 Run LSPFix.
Check the "I know what I'm doing" Button
Do Not worry about moving any files from the Keep to Remove side, just leave the defaults
Press the finish button on the bottom right of the screen

Then Reboot one more time

If that gets you back online, please come back here
Download this file - Combofix.exe and save it ONLY to your desktop
Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

I need to see back here all the following

1. Post the log from Combofix
2. Post a fresh hijackthis log

I did what you said, I had to go through everything you said before I could get internet access, and it's still really slow. I got both reports from Combofix and hijackthis:

Also could I ask if this was all caused by a virus or something that would affect my laptop if i plugged my external hard drives into it, or whether it was an error on my behalf that I wasn't aware of.

I would actually like to try a couple more scanners on your computer now that you have internet connection
We cleaned some malware with combofix, but there may be other files/folders present

Can you do the following please
Download: CCleaner v1.40.520 - Slim
This will help clear temp files, cookies, etc...
http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds.aspx
Uncheck all options except for Desktop icon when prompted
Once installed, run CCleaner
Next: click Options click the Advanced button
Uncheck: "Only delete files in Windows temp folders older than 48 hrs."
NEXT: Click the Cleaner
Then click Run Cleaner (bottom right)
OK the prompt, when finished scanning, just exit the program

Download and Install Spybot 1.4 from
HERE

After installation--Click the UPDATE button on the left
SEARCH FOR UPDATES on the right
Check, and then download all updates (Or simply right click in the results pane and "Select All)
Ensure all updates are successful, a GREEN check will indicate this
If you have an error updating, search for updates again and retry the download until all updates are successfully installed
After update is complete

Click the "Search & Destroy" button on the left
"Check for Problems"---When the Scan is complete
FIX all selected promblems in RED

RESTART the computer to finish any cleaning process

Back in Windows

Can you run one last scanner
Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe

Don't run it yet, instead plug in your external harddrive so they can be scanned also
Then:
  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, Click Options > Change settings
  • Choose the "Scan"-tab, remove the mark at "Heuristic analysis".
  • Back at the main window, mark the drives that you want to scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found:
  • If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:

This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured.
  • After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
  • Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
Back in Windows
Can you post the report from Dr.Web Cureit and one last hijackthis log please

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Follow the instructions posted http://www.thetechguide.com/forum/index.php/topic/22942-please-read-how-to-post-logs-from-frst/\'>Click Here

System32 is empty, is this fixable?
« Reply #5 on: July 01, 2007, 10:30:13 PM »
Remove any outdated versions of Java
You now have the latest version installed, which is
Java(tm) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
Don't remove that version, but any older updates/version

Close any programs you may have running - especially any web browsers.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.(Except for the latest version)
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {0BF43445-2F28-4351-9252-17FE6E806AA0} - (no file)

Optionally, the next ones can be ticked also, up to you
May help in speeding up startup and save on system resources
Also, do the required instructions if you decide to remove them

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
Quote
Application Scheduler installed along with RealOne_Player
Once installed it runs independently of RealOne Player.
To disable tkbell.exe in the new version (1) Start RealOne Player (2) Tools - Preferences (3) Automatic services in the Categories pane (4) Uncheck all options and then OK

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UserFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -u
Quote
Used in connection with memory dumps - you can disable these by - right clicking on My Computer selecting Properties and then the Advanced tab. Click on the Settings button in 'Startup and Recovery'. In the bottom pane - under 'Write debugging information' - click on the down arrow and then select 'None' - OK your way out

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
Quote
System Tray access to Apple's Quick Time viewer

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe"
Quote
Speeds up the time it takes to load the Adobe_Reader.
Your choice but not required for Adobe Reader to function properly

O4 - Startup: UltimateZip Quick Start.lnk = C:\Program Files\UltimateZip\uzqkst.exe

O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE
Quote
Application which launches common MS Office components to help speed up the launch of Office programs.   It's somewhat of a resource hog  and some users claim there's no difference with or without it but it usually isn't required - Note:  if you make use of the Microsoft Office Shortcut Bar outside an office program this application will need to be enabled for it to show.

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows
Including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Reboot the computer after all or anything above was removed

Back in Windows
NOTE: You have Morpheus toolbar installed, if you didn't intentionally install it, I would remove it from add/remove programs

If everything is running better
Please do the following
Go to START>>All Programs>>Accessories>>System Tools>>System Restore
Create a New restore point
Give it a name and click Create
When that's done

Go to START>>RUN>>type the following
cleanmgr
Hit OK
Let if finish calculating

Select the More Options tab
and click Cleanup.. under 'System Restore'
This will clear all later restore points except for the one you just made

Ok the prompts, it may take a few seconds to remove old restore points
Ok again after it's ready and let it finish cleaning

You should give your computer a bit more protection
Install
SpywareBlaster 3.5.1 by JavaCool
    *Will block bad ActiveX Controls
*Block Malevolent cookies in Internet Explorer and Firefox
*Restrict actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer
After installation, Check for updates
After updating, select "Protection" on the Left
Then select "Enable all Protection"
"Check for updates every couple of weeks"
after every update just simply click the "enable protection on all unprotected items"

In addition: Hold onto Spybot 1.4
Click on the Immunize button>>OK>>Click on Immunize at the top green cross
Do that after every update
Run a scan occassionally

Optionally, Hold onto CCleaner to help clear your temp files, etc...

If you remove Morpheus toolbar can you post one last hijackthis log please

Either way, can you post back after you do the above, I have one final step to remove some of the tools that we used
