Winsock not working...or something like that
« on: June 23, 2008, 03:23:54 AM »
My girlfriend and I have been having trouble with our laptops connecting to the internet. We can connect, but cannot send or recieve packets. The diagnostics on Internet explorer say that there is a problem with Winsock or something, but I have no idea what it is. I have tried programs from numerous websites that claim to fix the problem, but nothing has worked. I found one website that said to post a HiJackThis Log on a relevant forum, so here it is. This is the log from my girlfriends laptop, I will try the same solutions given back, then post my log if it doesnt work.

Winsock not working...or something like that
« Reply #1 on: June 23, 2008, 10:21:15 AM »
Hi Jason
I need you to do the following

Download a couple tools, you will need to save these tools and transfer them from a working Internet computer

Download
SDFix

Download this file - Combofix.exe

I remind you, transfer these from a cdrw, usb stick, etc....
Make sure you put them on the Desktop of the Non-Internet laptop
Do not try and run them from the media you transfer them with

After that
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.

In Safe mode
Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)
Go to START>>My Computer>>Double click to open the C:\ folder
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
I'll need to see that log later

Temporarily disable your AntiVirus>Firewall>>Or any Spyware protection software you have running so as it won't interfere with the following

Double click on ComboFix.exe to run the program

Follow the prompts
normally this fix takes anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes
After reboot
ComboFix will run again, then continue to create a log, this can take a few minutes
Let it run uninterrupted please
I'll need to see this log later

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

By default, the location of the combofix log is located at this location
C:\combofix.txt

Post the log from ComboFix
 Post the report from SDFix
 and a fresh hijackthis log

Note: if you have Internet connetction after doing the above, you can navigate here with the laptop
If you don't again, you will have to transfer the above logs from on computer to another

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Follow the instructions posted http://www.thetechguide.com/forum/index.php/topic/22942-please-read-how-to-post-logs-from-frst/\'>Click Here

Sorry for the delay, I only have limited time to use the internet, as I'm on holidays

Can you do the following please
download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here
Save the installer to desktop

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Full Scan", then click Scan.

  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.

  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
        * When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)

  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.
