internet slow
« on: March 12, 2009, 07:57:07 PM »
ive talked to time warner and they are clueless to the problem.

i can view websites, messenger fine, but as for streaming videos on youtube or downloading stuff its basically useless.

when i test my internet speeds it shows the speed of close to 7mbs and 366kb upload speed. ive cleared temp files on ie and firefox, prob remains. ive virus scanned/spybot search and destroy and still have problem.

this problem has been happening for the last week, i thought nothing of it because it usually happened when step dad was playing cod4 on ps3, but today it happened when he wasn't on ps3. my ps3 is hooked up wirelessly my pc is hooked up to router via Ethernet cable which is hooked directly to modem. usually goes away after 6+ hours and the times it does happen arent peak hours.

I don't think it's malware related, but can you post a Hijackthis log anyways
In addition, can you post the following from Hijackthis

Open Hijackthis>>Open MISC TOOLS SECTION>>Open UNINSTALL MANAGER
Click the SAVE LIST... button
Save the list to your desktop then copy>>Paste back here the Whole contents

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

What version of Windows Operating system are you running?

Also, I see 2 AntiVirus software installed, although AVG is not running it can still cause conflicts
Which AV are you happiest with?
AVG or CA Internet Security Suite

Which did you install last and is CA Internet Security Suite outdated

i get this error when trying to unistall
"Local machine: installation failed
    Installation:
Error: Action failed for file avgemc.exe: creating backup....
            Error 0x80070002 %DESTINATION% = "C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\avgemc.exe.install_backup_1", %SOURCE% = "C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\avgemc.exe"

"
, tried deleting the lines to do with avg in hijackthis, just whenever i click fix then redo it still shows up. and within last few hours i installed ca, so i dont think ca or avg are the problems.

Here's a statement of what AVG>Grisoft mentions about more than one AntiVirus
Quote
Generally (for all antivirus vendors), the use of more than one antivirus product under the same operating system is NOT recommended because of possible conflicts in their main components.

Now let's see if we can find a way to remove AVG properly!

OK, try this
Temporarily disable CA virus protection

Disable Windows Defender protection
Open Windows Defender.
Click on Tools, General Settings.
Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.

the best option is to redownload AVG and during installation I believe you have the choice to remove the installed version
When running ensure to Right click on the installer and choose to "Run as Adminstrator"
Reboot

If that option doesn't work

Open a Run box
Click the 2 keys Winkey and R
Type in services.msc
Okay any prompts

In the Service config windows
Stop these services from running
AVG Free8 E-mail Scanner
AVG Free8 WatchDog

Ensure to Apply and Ok each

Download the AVG removal tool to desktop
AVG Remover(32bit)
Right click on AVG removal tool and choose to "Run as Adminstrator"
Follow the prompts

Reboot afterwards
Can you do a couple troubleshooting steps

First I would like to see what your Host file looks like
Open Hijackthis>>Open MISC TOOLS SECTION>>Open Hosts File MANAGER
Click the Open in Notepad... button
Copy>>paste back here the whole contents of the text file that opens

Next: Can you reboot to safe mode with Networking
Is everything normal in Safe mode, or is it still slow downloading, etc...
it's fixed now.
thanks for all your help though, appreciate it
