I bought a laptop the other day, windows xp, but it won't connect to the internet with the wireless adapter and I've had to set my wired network adapter to a static ip address. When I first went on the laptop I had wired networking working fine with an automatic ip address but the wireless adapter would not connect to the internet (which is high speed from rogers and we have a router). So I reinstalled the networking stuff and couldn't connect with the wired nework, anyway heres my hijack this log hope you can help

Did you try using Windows to configure the Wireless, instead of using Dynex software?

The dynex software is for a differen wireless device that i tried when the original device wasnt working. I have tried using the devices software and a different adapter all together but neither have workedI get the same problems with those that I've gotten with windows

I'm still seeing Dynex in your hijackthis log
Since your not using the adapter, you should maybe uninstall it from your Add and Remove programs
See if it's not causing conflicts

Can you bypass your Router and hook Wired to the modem
Do you connect?
I would do it by the following steps, Disable the Wireless connection adapter from with Network Connections in Control Panel
 Have your wired connection Obtain DNS auto
Go to START>>RUN..type in cmd
Hit OK, at the prompt, type in

ipconfig /flushdns

Hit enter on your keyboard, note the single space after ipconfig
Shut down the computer
Power off Router and Modem (Unplug from power source)
Connect to Modem directly with cable
Power on modem and let it connect, then power on your laptop, see if you get wired connection

If so, It could be Router configuration, but it's a good first step to see if you can get connection

Afterwards: Power off modem again and shutdown laptop
connect back to Router with wired cable connection
Power up Modem, let it detect connection
Power up Router, let it detect connection
Power up Laptop, see if you can connect wired

If so, we can try some steps with Wireless after, letting only Windows configure your device

I'm not sure if I totally understand, what Operating System are you  working with?
What exact MAKE/MODEL of computer are you working with?

I need more info, do you have more than one computer in the house hold?

Sorry I should have been more clear. The computer I am working on is a Netbook NB-100 (Toshiba), it runs windows xp but its a very small computer, no cd drive, lots of usb ports, has wired and wireless networking (if it will work). I also have a desktop computer running windows xp which is connected to the network, it is set to auto DNS, it is wired not wireless. My boyfriend has a desktop as well which runs on windows vista it is also connected to the network. I'm not sure why but his is running a static IP. Don't really want to set it to auto if I can help it I don't want to mess up his network. I use to have another laptop which connected to the network wirelessly on auto DNS with no problems.

Any I set the laptop to auto DNS, disabled the wireless adapter and deleted the Dynex software. I then ran the ipconfig /flushdns it said it flushed it successfully so I shut the computer down, powered off the router and modem (by unplugging them), waited 5 minutes and connected the networking cable from the laptop directly to the modem then plugged the modem in and waited for it to boot up. Once it was going I turned the laptop on and waited for it to boot up. It wouldn't connect to the network or internet it just sat on aquiring network address.

I followed the instructions in the link to set up an openDNS, restarted the computer and still could not connect to the internet or the network.

When I set the network adapter to a static ip it will work, the network connects and I have internet

Can you Disable your Wired connection in Network connections in Windows Control Panel
By right clicking on it and choosing Disable
Then Enable your Wireless connection
Check the Properties>Under Wireless networks tab
Have Windows configure your wireless network settings

Assign IP, use one that is Not assigned to any other computer
Reboot, see if you can connect
You should have Wireless security enabled, so you should have to enter a Passphrase first to access internet

I did as you asked and was able to connect wirelessly to the network but still could not get the internet to work on the wireless here are the setting i used:

this is from ipconfig but a few things dont look right to me,  I also noticed DHCP was not enabled how do we enable that, When I go to control panel/administrative tools/services the DHCP client is started

DHCP is not enabled because you are assigning IP addresses
With your Router however, you should be able to assign them all Auto

But for the time being
Are you sure no other assigned computers are using this IP address
192.138.0.2

If your sure, can you also change your Primary DNS server
In your Wireless properties in Network Connections
To the Ip of the default gateway
192.168.0.1

Leave the secondary blank
Reboot and see if you can connect

I changed the ip adress to 192.168.0.7 and it still wouldn't connect to the internet so I changed the dns with no luck but it still connects to the network

Did you ISP assign you IP addresses
when you first connected with them?

I don't think Rogers in the Ontario area does, unless you actually call them and request a Static
This may be the problem

It does seem odd that you use to be able to connect with Auto assigned (Dynamic) and now you can only connect with Static

Do you know how to enter your Routers configuration?
Can you checks it's configuration and see if it's set to Dynamic please
