Still experiencing a few problems
« on: September 14, 2010, 08:25:37 AM »
I just got rid of bankerfox.a virus yesterday that got past my McAfee. My computer is still not running as I think it should. Not actually sure it is related to the virus though. When I try to access some pages online w/Internet explorer not able to do so when I type in the url. But if I do search and then click on link can access. Also just tried to run a HiJackThis to post for you and got this message:

For some reason your system denied write access to Hosts file. If any hijacked domains are in this file, HijackThis may NOT be able to fix this.

If that happens, you need to edit the file yourself. To do this, click Start, Run and type:

     notepad C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts

and press Enter. Find the line(s) HijackThis reports and delete them. Save the file as 'hosts'(with quotes), and reboot.

Can you right click on Hijackthis.exe and choose to Run as Administrator
Then try a fresh Scan and save logfile, post the contents of the file back here

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Follow the instructions posted http://www.thetechguide.com/forum/index.php/topic/22942-please-read-how-to-post-logs-from-frst/\'>Click Here

you should do exactly what the program suggested, "C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc" is the same for xp, vista, 7 and for both 32/64bit operating systems. There is a host file in the etc folder, right click -> open with -> notepad should open it up and delete all the lines without a pound sign.

i also suggest you download malwarebytes and doing a full scan with it. you probably may not have gotten rid of it and it's just waiting to come out from hiding.

Let's try the following
Please download TFC by Old Timer and save it to your desktop.
http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/TFC.exe
Save any unsaved work. TFC will close ALL open programs including your browser!
Right-click on TFC.exe and choose to "Run as Admin"
Click the Start button to begin the cleaning process and let it run uninterrupted to completion.
Important! If TFC prompts you to reboot, please do so immediately.

Back in Windows
download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here
Save the installer to desktop

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
        * When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

With that log from MBAM
Can you also do the following:
Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from >>here<< and save it to your desktop.
  • Right click on RSIT.exe and choose to "Run As Admin"
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Your firewall may alert you that RSIT is requesting Internet access. Please allow it.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open:  log.txt<-- this will be maximized and info.txt<-- this will be minimized.
Post back those 2 logs also
