Strange Problem in XP
« on: April 27, 2003, 09:23:08 PM »
Hiya, hope someone can help me with this.
Don't know if anyones had a similar problem, but all my usernames have disappeared in the taskmanager.

In xp, if you go to task manager, processes.  You should get a list of:
Image name, Username etc etc

Well, all the username fields are blank?

Same with all user logins, including administrator.....

Anyone got any ideas whats causing this or how to correct it?

Thanks in advance,

Liam.

Erm, ok, well if it helps explain the problem better, try looking at this Screenshot.

(if it works.......)

Thanks,

It only shows users that are logged on. Also, why do you need to view this? Why not just use the actual tool for view and editing that information under Users Accounts in the Control Panel?

Ah, i see what your getting at, but no, you don't really understand the question, me thinks  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blink.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'\' />
Did you look at the Screenshot?
I think i explained this in the original post, but, basically, when using the task manager, in the process listing, you can see all the different running processes on a machine, and the associated user who initiated it.  I can't.  The user field list in my process listing is Blank.
I need to see this so i can tell, who started a process, etc.  is it a system process, etc etc etc.?!?
Hopefully this makes sense to someone, if you have xp have a look on your system and you'll see what i mean. ( i think its the same in 2k)

Any Useful help appreciated,

Liam

Nice one tracky, well its not that either....

Suprisingly, the username collumn is infact selected, thats how i can tell its blank!   http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'\' />

Anyway, searching deeper into the system, i discover a system event:
The description for Event ID ( 3 ) in Source ( NUEWizard ) cannot be found.
Which equally has a mysterious 'blank' username.  Could this shed some light on the matter.

have also tried a 'tasklist /V' from cmd, and found that the username field there does include some data, like:
NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM, or
N/A

I'm not sure if it means anything, but the Session Name in this listing is blank?!?

As always, all help greatfully recieved,

Liam
