Go to Homeunix.org and see what they have...its for dynamic or static ip service.

Don't let the domain name fool you...the client program that dynamically updates the dns is running on my WinXP box and I just have the proper ports forwarded to my Unix box. Homeunix.org is just one of the domains you could put your subdomain under...there are many to choose from.

Easiest way, get a static IP. That way you have your domain registrar, a DNS server, and your home PC with a webserver on it. You just set the domain to use the dns server addresses, set the dns server to your static ip, and that's it. With a dynamic IP the process is similar but there's some extra steps involved. Basically you need to find a service like mydns, use their dns servers, and run a program on your PC that auto-updates their dns server with your new IP everytime it changes.

1. Go to http://www.dyndns.org/ and sign up for an account
2. Go to the dynamic dns section of the site @ https://members.dyndns.org/nic/dyndns
3. Select a hostname ala....Type the first part of the name in the input box, and select the second part of the name from the drop-down list. This allows you to have anything.dyndns.org, anythingelse.homeunix.com, etc
4. Go to the clients page and download one of the client programs to autoupdate your dns entry: http://clients.dyndns.org/windows.php
I use DirectUpdate.
5. Install DirectUpdate on your computer.
6. You should have the following pieces of info ready:
Hostname you selected in step 3
Username on Dyndns along w/ your password.

7. Once DirectUpdate is installed, then you need to go to Launch Admin Settings. Go to the status tab and click \"Create\" to create an account.
8. Account type will be \"dyndns.org (Dynamic)\"
9. Domain will be where you type your hostname. Mine says \"rudeboy52.homeunix.org\"
10. Username and password are what you did in step 1.

Click ok and DirectUpdate should be running. It might take a few minutes for it to actually find your account, connect to your computer, and update your IP.

Now that you have that setup....we need to know if you ISP blocks port 80. I assume you have a router that does port forwarding? Forward port 80 to the computer that will be hosting the website. Post the address and we will test it for you. If 80 doesnt work then you can try forwarding 8080 and we will test that for you also.

im getting my DSL in at the end of the month im just on dial up at the mo! so im getting everything ready now so i dont have to start this all then!

my isp does not block port 80 i asked them.

ok i signed up as tekpants.homedns.org and DU is running fine sooooooo..... now how do i tell my registra to point my domain at me?

and then i think im done apart from finishing my site of course lol.

Look under the \"Change IP\" link on that control panel. If you have a static IP then you will know what is...otherwise you may need to find a way to forward it to http://tekpants.homedns.org

iv only gone and f***ing done it http://www.tekpants.com wooooohoooooo only slight problem is that my registra insists on putting a banner on my site for doing the forwarding for free and it dont quite work properly with my style sheet ho hum i can live with that just for now.

thanks guys thanks alot you have realy helpt me alot i have ordered up my 512k line so on monday 18th i should be able to set it up on the other computer i intend on using as a server reasnobaly quick.

better start writing my guide and i would like to include credits to both of you guys as well if thats ok ?

now i need to set up invision board i had it running using MS IIS as my server software but i want to run apache and you have to install php manualy on apache and its not at all easy.

but nearly there.....!!!!!!!! yey! yey! yey!

If you're going to run linux on the dedicated server, then PHP generally comes installed already, you don't have to do anything special. Just make sure you have apache, php, and MySQL and that's virtually everything you need (ok you need perl too, but so much depends on that I doubt you could accidentally leave it out).

i just tryed it now from work and only the stupid banner was displayed i think mabey it timed out as its only hosted on 56k at the moment and the work connection is 64k isdn LOL!

Im sure it will be fine when i hav my 512k line in (i hope)

could you try it again please my ADSL is set up now and thoses stupid people cannot tell me anything about port 80 execpt the fact that its probably somthing to do with the internet (im seriouse about that btw)
