Problem reinstalling windows98 without reformattin
« on: July 16, 2003, 11:36:01 AM »
Hi Gurus,
My PC got infected with a virus.. from a file that i downloaded. and first all the programs behaved abnormally. adn when i rebooted it deleted some of the widows files. So i tried reinstalling win98 and it says that i already have windows installed and to hit F8 when it says "starting windows 98 " and follow the instructions from there. But i did not make much progress. It said himem.sys and a couple of .sys files are missing. So ilooked up Microsoft support and it says to extract the .sys files from the win98 cd and use the exract tool on the win98 startup disk to restore
them so i did that and now i get a buch of *.vxd files missing.. It says "System.ini refers to a file that does not exist ........" and that  *.vxd file is missing.......
How do i reinstall windows without formatting my drive?? i have a lot of data on it.
Or how doi retrieve that data before i format it??
Please help

Do you have a second HD to install in there. You should be able to transfer your files to that then reformat.

So that we'll all know what product to avoid, what was the terrific anti-virus program you were using that allowed this to happen? (Or are you hanging your head in shame?)

Hi !

See Surya, u need to back up ur data first but u need Secondary Hdisk for tht.

May b ur best pal will take the risk by copying ur 'infected' files but u`ve to do tht in any way.

If u can`t manage to back up, then there is some risk but troubleshootin will be done !

First of all Install Windows using any Bootable CD, it`ll prompt u to save ur current System Files but DO NOT DO SO ! All ur Programs will still Function & ur DATA will not be lost.

If u don`t `ve bootable CD, then get a Win98 Bootdisk & start it with CDROM support & then install Win98 from CD without backin ur current System File (coz they r corrupt).

Best Of Luck  & Hope it wuz b4 time !
