Go into device manager and see if the cd-rom is listed, right click on it and choose properties to see if is working OK. Check IDE cable to make sure it is fully plugged in if that fails try another cable. If still not working it may be dead. Upgrade Time!

I too am having the same thing happen.  I am using Windows XP professional.  My DVD+RW drive worked one day, and the next it didn't.  Device manager says it is working properly.  I have checked my system files, and I still have the CDFS and UDFS components installed.  Does anyone have any solution?

It seems that evryone's gettin' hit by thye CD-ROM bug......I in too!

Mine is a 52X Hitachi/LG CD-RW and of late, it is functioning rather erratically...the symptoms are the same as those of the drives owned by the guys whose posts precede mine! Of late, there's been another problem...it opens Explorer all right, but whenever i open a subfolder, or try to copy a file or somethin', this is what I get....

   Cannot access/copy X : Invalid/Incorrect MS-DOS function.

Must be a problem with the RW...the file opened up quite nicely on my friend's PC...must mention that he's got a 6-year old Creative Infra 24X CD-ROM.

Any help will be very much appreciated!

   PS : I'm using MS Win XP + SP1....says that the drive's functioning great....damn!

You can add one more person with this problem.  I have no idea what caused the sudden problem of my cd-rom not working, with anything.  Not a game, music cd, program, nothing.  I searched all kinds of forums on the internet for some hint of whats happening, and nothing.  I would just like to know whats going on!! Even if my computer's going south.  Someone has to know whats happening.  Please someone tell us whats going on.

If you are using Windows 9x and 2000, going to the Device manager, select CD-ROM properties, and uncheck the DMA button.  I've seen this over and over again.  This is what I use to do on my own machine and it worked.  It may not work on your, but you are welcome to use my trick if you like.  Once you uncheck the DMA button, restart the machine.  You CD-ROM is working again.  Have fun.

I suggest that you upgrade the BIOS on your motherboard, because sometimes that can cause the CDROM or DVDROM drives not to read the CD/DVD's properly.

I have the same problem with both of my machines, one has 2000 and the other XP. Problem has been there since day one when OS was installed. The only work around I have found is to place a CD or DVD in the drive and reboot. I can then have full use of the drive until the next time I power up the PC and have to go thru the same routine. Maybe this will help someone out there. Sure hope a resolution can be found soon.

Try this:

Go to task manager, and kill UFD.exe .

Now you see drives in explorer again after F5.

UFD.exe is usb flash drive driver/program with interesting side efect.

I hope this will work, it worked for me (same symptoms).

Hey, just thought I'd throw something out there for ya.  In addition to taking my drives off of DMA in bios, I booted to safe mode and deleted all IDE controllers.  Let windows re-detect them and reboot.  Now my CD drives work perfectly.

I had the same problem with Windows XP Home and it was driving me nuts.  But as often is the case, the solution was simple.

In my case anyway, I had recently purchased a Micro Advantage Quick Drive.  ( A USB flash drive.)   It worked fine but caused all kinds of problems with my CD-RW/DVD Rom drives.   Once I uninstalled the Quick Drive software all of my problems with my CD Rom access went away.

So if any of you have a Quick Drive or similiar flash drive it may very well be your problem....

Good luck !!!!
