Software / xp says i am not administrator even though i am
« on: March 10, 2004, 02:29:26 PM »
Check the local user accounts for "Administrator"

If you don't see it than XP is has hidden it from you.  This account is built-in and can not be removed, only renamed.  Try logging in as it.  Default password will be blank unless you changed it.

I'm going to side with space on this one.  More M$ howto's would be overkill.  The forum pretty much takes care of that anyway.  If we find something that no one has done before we could post that.

Bring on the Linux howto's.

Good news for all of you that might need blood transfusions in the future.  Thought this may of some interest to some of you:

The American Medical Association researchers have made a remarkable discovery. It seems that some patients needing blood transfusions may benefit from receiving chicken blood rather than human blood.  It tends to make the men cocky and the women lay better.

Idle Chat / Do you use Windows 2003 as your desktop OS?

XP with a new theme.  A few nice features here and there.  I had to move it to my second computer after I tried running Battlefield 1942 on it though.  The game crashed big time.  I waste far too much time on that game right now.  At least 5 hours a week. http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':P\' />

Software / Unistallign Windows 98 without harming Windows 200
« on: December 08, 2003, 06:16:56 PM »
Going off the top of my head here...

Before nuking C where 98 sits edit the boot.ini file (on your 2K partition) to point to the new partition info after removing 98.  There is another file Bootsect.dos I think that you can delete at that point as well.  Sorry but I am away from my system at the moment.  There is more to consider though.  Take a look at this and read carefully before you just remove the partition.

Software / 2k server programs
« on: July 07, 2003, 06:18:20 PM »
I remember seeing all kinds of little programs that will install others as services.  No idea off the top of my head but try searching google.com for it.

All I found was some cryptic messages and:
Greyware Autoexec Service

I have a chat server here I will play with.  I will let you know if I pull it off.

Software / adding WinNT&WIn2000 to multiboot CD
« on: July 07, 2003, 06:09:33 PM »
1/ When I choose one option on the menu, it cannot run. But when I enter the "Main" folder and then type: ex: "run boot98Se.ima", it runs very well. I understand because the *.ima files located in subfolders (not in the root folder), so the program cannot find them.
So, how to declare in the diskemu.cmd so that diskemu can locate the *.ima located in subfolders?????

2/ I cannot start the NT Workstation. I alreay extracted 3 or 4 boot disks into nt4w folder (located in root) and I also modified the nt4wsect.dat so that it refers to the nt4w folder instead of i386.
Is it necessary to copy more files from i386 folder of installation disk??

3/ I can ALMOST start Win2000 but it requires "insert SP3 floppy disk. I don't know what happens??
Okay
1) I have no idea how to change the default location.  When booting it will want all *.bin *.dat and *.ima files in the root of the CD.  If you are trying to "hide" them from the end user just make them hidden.  Just a suggestion and by no means the final answer.

2) The edits are the same for NT4 as 2000/XP.  If it still is not working for you take your 98.ima file and add smartdrv.exe to it.  Install NT4 from that and it works fine.

3) Did you slipstream SP4?  Check the other SP4 threads here.  Otherwise double check that all service files from the I386 folder got copied to the root of the CD as well.

Try a new serial number.  Upgrade serials work on the real CD's as well.  You may not need to get a whole new CD.

M$ used the same registry hive layout for pretty much all Windows OS.  98 will get confussed and write to the 2000/XP registry or vice versa.  Recent boot manager programs (most require $$$) have solved that problem.   Your other option is to run one in a VMWare session to keep them seperate.  Try running "fdisk /mbr" and then reinstalling.  It should not help but may kick start the computer for you.  BACKUP everything before running that command.

I had something similar once after upgrading to a new Intel board.  Did you download all the drivers for the board?  IDE and chipset files?  The problem disappeared after installing all those files.

Software / Can anyone tell me how to install 2k/xp from DOS??
« on: May 02, 2003, 04:06:04 PM »
Maybe this will help, maybe not....

On NT4 you have to use a FAT16 partition under 2GB if installing from DOS.  I have set the unattend to expand the partition and convert to NTFS afterwards but it then expands to fill the disk.  No extra partition available after expanding.  The partition must already exist and make sure you activate it.  That one messes me all the time.

On 2000/XP use FAT32.  Both can read it and the install goes a lot better.  You can set the partition to any size you want and set it to convert to NTFS during the install.

I don't know about the fatal errors but if installing off the CD make sure you load smartdrv.exe in you autoexec file.  Takes days without it.

Software / [multi Os Cd Problem] Getting No Emulation Error
« on: May 02, 2003, 03:55:21 PM »
Where did you get your .DAT file from TR.  My site or did you make your own?  The DAT file is just a renamed bootsect.bin file from the oringinal CD's.   I have had people report problems but everyone tracked it down to a corrupt file or error in the diskemu.cmd file.

Anyway open your DAT file in a HexEditor.  Do not use Notepad!  Near the end, find the line:
SETUPLDR.BINBOOTFIX.BINI386

and change the I386 at the end to the folder name you are using.  So if using W2KP for 2000 Pro change the line to:
SETUPLDR.BINBOOTFIX.BINW2KP

In this example I put my boot (setup) files in the W2KP folder at the ROOT of my CD.

As to the error you mention.  No it is not an error.  That is just how the program passes along its info to you.  Everyone gets that message.

Running xxxxSECT.DAT                               -- What file you selected
No Emulation Type Image (Raw)                --  Type of emulation
00000800000000001                                --  String count (if I remember right, part of the report from diskemu)
Press Enter to ...                                       --  This is the part from M$.  Just like their CD's.

Software / Win2k not retaining printer installs
« on: February 20, 2003, 06:21:33 PM »
Can you recount the number of PC\'s connecting to the PC with the printer.  If you get 10 then your problem is that the PC hosting the printer is a workstation install.  Workstation or Pro both lock down to only 10 connections allowed.  You need Server to go beyond that.

If this is your problem search google for \"10+ connections to workstation\" or \"turn workstation to server\".  There is a way to break that barrier but it is not supported.  M$ also swears that it is not possiable.

Not sure about that question senne?

The multiboot CD\'s from my site are based on the diskemu boot loader I got from Bart (www.nu2.nu)  It acts for all purposes like an autoexec.bat file allowing you to pick from several boot options.  Install 2000=press 1, install XP=press 2 and so on.  You can use floppy images from WinImage to create your own if you want.  For ever key on your keyboard you can have a new choice.  Just depends on how much space you have on the CD.

Many other sites are now doing the same thing.  Several now include their own automated multiboot generator.  The program will ask for each CD and then copy to the right spot while making any edits you need.  There are still some limitations to these and are not nearly as fun as doing it yourself.  They can still be useful though.

Software / win95-98SE-ME-XP
« on: February 20, 2003, 06:06:11 PM »
Your in for the long haul.  Use the XP and ME/9X page at my site to setup the iso.  You can combain each to create the multi-boot CD.  However you first iso file will be more than 700MB for sure.  You will have to \"trim the fat\" from each OS.  Remove any extra folders that you will not need.  I remember getting 98 down to about 70MB\'s but XP is pretty big.  300MB? I think.  I never use ME anymore so I don\'t remember how big it gets.  Based on a recent stream of emails I will try to list the fat that can be taken out of 2000 and XP.  I will try and find a ME and 98 disk and post the same info for them soon.

Hope this helps,

Software / Windows 2000 Error
« on: February 20, 2003, 01:21:18 PM »
The 6 meg space at the end is left by 2000 in case you upgrade to a dynamic disk.  You need to go into fdisk and remove the NTFS partition if you want to go back to 98.  Other disk utilitie programs could help make it easier but should not be needed.

Space is correct about the HD or CD being too fast.  I have had the same errors before on older CPU\'s.  Mine was a K6-2 that had the problem.  Of course the K6-2 had many other problems that could have been involved as well.

On you bios boot screen it will ask for DEL or F? to enter setup.  Hit that key and then change the boot order.  Boot order is in different places for each BIOS vendors.  Poke around and you will see it.   Look for something listing CDROM, A:, Removable devices, Harddrive and such.  That is the line most likely.

Hope this helps,
