Hardware / i need help !!!
« on: July 27, 2003, 08:50:07 PM »
Well a few more ideas,

It could be that your power supply has blown a fuse or burnt out completey. If you have a multi meter I'd check to make sure that the posative and negative leads actually have power.

When you plug the power into the motherboard do you hear anything do any fans get a bit of power and spin up for a very short time and then stop?

If it works with the old no name PSU its either going to be the power supply or the motherboard that has the problem.

Hope this helps

Software / XP folders sharing
« on: July 11, 2003, 08:33:17 AM »
Well I don't know fully if you can share folders already or not but the sharing option for password access etc the way that windows 2000 shares folders can be turnedon via the tools\Folder options\view menu right at the bottome of the scroll list is the use simple sharing option, if you turn that off then you can use password sharing etc. However ifyou have private files and folders turned on you can't share those folders that are private.

I was pretty much sure that was the case neldog2, but I still can't send a file using MSN messenger on my network I have mapped the port. The strange thing is that I can start whiteboard shairing, which in theory needs the same kind of port mapping to work

Software / adding WinNT&WIn2000 to multiboot CD
« on: July 09, 2003, 11:28:01 PM »
In the autoexec, bat of a windows ME boot disk and I imagine all the other boot disks there is a variable set to %CDROM% what you could do is if it isn't an enviromental variable make it one with a line Set %var% = ..... I would suspect that this variable already exists for the autoexec.bat

hmm worth a thought Josetann, but I was thinking that it would be much the same as setting up so that I could DCC send on IRC using MIRC. I had to tell the windows ICS software that any request for data on a port of 1024 was to be sent to my home (Fake) IP address, as people that I was sending stuff to where receving requests from my "real" IP address and because that machine wasn't sending anything I didn't get a reply and so both people just timed out.

From what I understand people will only be seeming my "real" IP address not my "fake" one which I use on the network and as such I would have to map a port that says for data on 6891 TCP port should be send to my computer.

Hey guys,

Umm ok the layout of this problem is as follows:

I am on a home network with all the computers using windows XP Pro SP1. We have a gateway IP address 192.168.0.1 and my computer 192.168.0.254 I am using MSN messenger 6 now, and the problem is that I can't get it to send files.

I mapped the port 6891 TCP on the gateway to my computer which is what every thing that I have read says is the the port for MSN file sends and I have confirmed this with a port program but my sends still don't make it. I know that the other person is accepting the send and both of us don't have a firewall running. The person that I am trying to send to is not on a network.

Does anyone have any ideas that I could try to fix this?

Cheers,

Secret Ninja

YAY! success http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' /> all fixed up, it was just Virtual PC having a problem with my Hard drive image

One slight Problem I am facing is that using setupmgr from deploy.cab I made 3 winnt.sif files I chose the Hide pages option and entered the serial number, thus making an auto enter serial number but when I ran setup it totally missed the winnt.sif file and I had to enter the serial.

I am thinking that it is either because I shouldn't have used the Hide Pages option unelss I wanted to fill out the whole section including the User name, or it didn't work because I saved the file as winnt.sif at the end of setup. The winnt.sif is in the i3886 folder, but do I need the .bat file? what am I missing here

Ok almost got it I made a sucessful 2 in 1 but when I made the 3 in 1 it failed to find the EULA and now the good CD that I made also have the same problem maybe it has something to do with Virtual PC.

Has anyone else had a problem with an xp 2 in 1 saying that it can't find the EULA?

Software / MultiBoot CD
« on: June 28, 2003, 04:15:03 PM »
Well having never used this easyboot V4 I don't know how to make it with that, but you could follow the multi boot CD from www.tech-hints.com and just put 2000 XP and dos onto the CD which should fit without any problems and custimise the menu to suit your needs.

Could you perhaps provide a like to information about easyboot too?

Software / PM 7- Using Two floppy images in multiboot cd
« on: June 22, 2003, 07:34:19 PM »
Well I forgot to add this bit so here it is.

use the boot disk wizard and make two boot disks then delete the files off the first disk that aren't needed and copy the files from the second disk onto the first. There are probably other ways to do it but that's the way that I made mine.

Great that's another fix for it, just that before when i was using the complex sharing method before I would get promted for a user name and password, This will work for the time being but.

Ok for all those wanting to put Partition magic 7 onto one boot floopy disk all you need are the following files:

AUTOEXEC.BAT
CONFIG.SYS
MOUSE.INI
RESTART.COM
PQMAGIC.EXE
PQMAGIC.OVL
PQMAGIC.PQG
PQPB.RTC
RESCUE.TXT
ZABOUT.PQG
MOUSE.COM
PMHELP.DAT
AUTOEXE2.BAT
HIMEM.SYS

The restart.com file was just an added extra I like.

Edit the autoexec.bat as follows:

@ECHO Off
PROMPT $P$G

REM -------------------------------------------------------
REM -- DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE! IF YOU WISH TO ADD NETWORK --
REM -- OR CD-ROM DRIVERS, CUSTOM KEYBOARDS, ETC., PLEASE --
REM -- EDIT AUTOEXE2.BAT INSTEAD.                        --
REM -------------------------------------------------------

IF EXIST AUTOEXE2.BAT CALL AUTOEXE2.BAT

ECHO  PartitionMagic 7.0
ECHO  © 1994-2001, PowerQuest Corporation. All rights reserved.
ECHO.
ECHO  Loading please wait...
ECHO.

PQMAGIC

edit config.sys:

DEVICE=HIMEM.SYS
REM DEVICE=EMM386.EXE
DOS=HIGH,UMB
LASTDRIVE=Z

REM -------------------------------------------------------
REM -- Put code page variable (yyy) here.                --
REM -------------------------------------------------------

REM DEVICEHIGH=DISPLAY.SYS CON=(EGA,yyy,)

REM -------------------------------------------------------
REM -- Put network or CD-ROM drivers here.               --
REM -------------------------------------------------------

REM DEVICE=CDROM.SYS /D=driver_name

And that's it http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />

Hello Everyone,

I know there are already a few similar posts around but I figured it was high time to try and get one post together with everything that you need to make a Windows XP 3 in 1 CD.

Using the guide from http://www.tech-hints.com I have made a 2 in 1 of XP Home and XP Pro but the 3rd Corp addition would be great and I would really appreciate all the help that I can get with getting this done.

Tech Clinic / Re: XP Pro Half Install
« on: June 07, 2003, 10:18:38 PM »
Hello everyone,

I have this very annoying but strange problem which is as follows:

Having purchased a TravelMate 230 Laptop with XP Home installed. I decided to clean install XP Pro. The install all goes fine howerver when ever a scan disk is run I don't get to see hte information screen that scna disk displays, all I get to see is a blank black screen. I know that scan disk is running because I get lots of hard drive activity. I have got in touch with Acer Tech support but they put me onto M$ and they have been unable to find a fix for it. As a side note I have also tried just upgrading XP Home to XP Pro but I still get a black screen for scan disk, does anyone know how to fix this?

Cheers,

Nathan

No No No people you are going about it all wrong the second disk has basically a copy of the first disk plus the PM7.exe file I think from memory you just copy that .exe to the first CD and edit either the config.sys or autoexec.bat that prompts for the second disk and REM or delete that bit.

I have the disk image if any of you want it.
