Software / Bypassing WinXP serial check
« on: August 18, 2003, 03:23:33 AM »
There is a manager in the deploy.cab file in the Support folder on the XP cd.
Extract the files from the .cab to a folder and read the deploy.chm file.

It explains how to do an unattended install which can be customised to
only insert a CD-Key..

Software / Recovery CD
« on: August 13, 2003, 01:02:07 PM »
@Brian
Ghost is one of many DRIVE IMAGING packages. I personally find
it both quick and easy to use.

The disk(s) you create in the begining is a COMPLETE system backup
at the time of creation. This means that you need to install your
OS(Operating System) and all drivers and whatever programs and
utilities you may want or need.

Then you create an IMAGE of the complete drive and burn it to
disk(/s).

When you start having problems with the OS. Backup any docs and
personal data and then RE-GHOST the drive with the backup image
on disk.

On average a re-ghost can take 15-20 min compared to a couple of
hours re-installing everything from scratch.

If you want further info don't hesitate to ask.

Software / Recovery CD
« on: August 13, 2003, 04:03:12 AM »
Hi Terry,

It sounds like you may want to make a setup CD in such a way that if your OS
starts giving problems you just put the cd in and restore the entire OS to a
fresh installation including all drivers and programs.

If this is the case then you could use GHOST and make an image of a fresh
install of your OS and then burn it to cd.

If not then give me a few more details as to what you want to do.

Software / open port prestige
« on: August 13, 2003, 03:51:05 AM »
Check with your Administrator if you are allowed to use emule on the network.

You could also try and change the port to 80 or 8080 as these are
the default HTTP ports.

If neither works then sorry. As an Admin myself I dont allow P2P
programs on the Corp. network  because of security reasons.

To change port settings goto Network settings and look for the
port settings.

Software / MultiBoot CD with EasyBoot Menu
« on: August 12, 2003, 10:17:14 AM »
Hi There,

I have created a 3 in 1 multiboot cd with 98SE, 2KProSP3 & XP ProSP1
and a few dos boot utils.

I have managed to get an Easy Boot 4 menu partially working
and was wondering if anyone else has had any luck.

The Dos Utils, 2K and XP are fully working from the menu but 98SE
is giving some minor problems which I will fix later.

I used the steps in www.tech-hints.com to
create the first part then used EasyBoot to link the menus.

The problem i am facing is that I have to duplicate all the files in the
ROOT folder into the easyboot folder in order for the menu system to work.

Perhaps BART could possibly help as EasyBoot uses his boot loader.

Software / WinPE !!??
« on: July 14, 2003, 09:22:20 AM »
Guys, I think you have your wires crossed.

WinPE is Windows Pre-Installation Enviroment.
It is a cut down Windows XP Operating system
used for diagnostics and as a recovery console.

PXE is Intels Pre-boot Execution Enviroment.
Used to boot off a server(for dumb terminals) or
to preset certain enviroment variables when the
machine is booting (not too sure of my expliantion here)

Software / What!?
« on: July 10, 2003, 03:04:58 AM »
Stupid question but 1 Did you do a search for *.ISO files on your local hard drives?

2. In your cdimage command line. Did you specify the output file with the .ISO extension.

I had a problem that i gave my output file "3in1" without the ".iso" and CDImage created the file correctly, just not with the .iso extention.

If that is your problem then just rename your file and put the ".iso" into the name.

Good luck.

Software / write CD uper 700 MB to cd with 700MB size
« on: July 08, 2003, 02:57:47 AM »
You need to use CDImage to create the cd you want.

When you copy the files to your Hard Drive they are copied as seperate directories
and files.
However on CD the duplicate files are encoded once to disc. That
is why it only takes up +/- 500Mb.

Software / Win2K Install Error: EULA
« on: July 06, 2003, 05:09:56 PM »
I Am having the same problem as Tox, just the other way around.

My 2K is fine but Xp sp1 is giving the EULA Error.

As far as I can tell the problem lies in the TXTSETUP.SIF file and its
position in the overall directory structure.
In other words it needs to be in the correct directory to be read by
the install routine.

Also check to see that you don't have a txtsetup.si_
file in any of your directories.

If i figure it out I'll let you know...

Good Luck

Software / Everything you wanted to know about WinPE

Scalar,

Does that mean that if I put the files listed on to a
bootable cd it should in theory boot into a PE enviroment?

Or does one need the OEM kit to create the installation?

Software / run HDD REGENERATOR from a CD
« on: June 19, 2003, 02:53:06 AM »
You are going to have to create a RAM drive and copy the contents of the disk image to
the ram drive and run the .exe from the ram drive.

the reason you are getting errors is that the system is trying to write data back to the A: drive and in this
case your A: drive is actually a CD running in emulation mode.

Do a search in Google on \" Creating Ram Drives\" for furthet info.

Hope this helps.

Second Question:
 have you tried Alt-F1/Alt-F2?

First Question:
It is possible that there was a problem with your disc and it does not report the
missing folder(s) in explorer or dos. I have had the problem a couple of times.

Best info I can offer khalidnet2002.

Software / Windows 98 Install
« on: May 18, 2003, 06:42:57 AM »
Another option would be to take out the hard drive and take it to a pc
shop and see if they could copy the 98 cab files onto the hard drive for you.

They could use a laptop hard drive adapator to standard IDE connector
and plug it into a desktop pc ad do the transfer.

Your best bet would be to check  Tech-Hints

I have created a Win98SE, Win2K SP3 and WinXP SP1 whi come up
to 713Mb....

Yours could be a bit of a problem even if you use cdimage.exe

Software / Windows 98 Install
« on: May 15, 2003, 02:30:51 PM »
http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/huh.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'\' />  Your best bet at this stage is to try and get one of those parallel port CD-ROM drives and connect it up.
You may need to boot of a stiffy and then load the drivers for the CD-ROM drive.

Copy the \WIN98 directory to the laptops hard drive and then run setup from the hard drive.

Good luck.. http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />

Software / W98SE, Win2KSP3 & XPProSP1 Help
« on: May 13, 2003, 01:10:07 PM »
http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'\' /> I have created a bootable cd as mentioned in the topic that worked perfectly( minus XP SP1).

My question is mainly for Twinkie. His site says
Quote
STOP! The following edits where made to a standard
XP install. If you are using a slipstreamed SP1 make sure you do not use the txtsetup.sif file.
You will need to edit the file manually. I will update the zip's soon.

Have the zips been updated or can I simply use the txtsetup.sif file provided in the *.ZIP file that
is on his website?

Thanks for any help.  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/huh.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'\' />

Do you have to do an install before the password gets encrypted or did you
create this in one of the tools from the deploy/support CAB files?

Software / multiple sound cards
« on: May 09, 2003, 06:54:25 PM »
I have setup two identical 16 bit sound cards and used my pc to DJ. I installed
the cards one at a time and the drivers each card was installed.

I then ran 2 instances of winamp and went into  Winamps right click menu
OPTIONS - PREFERENCES. Goto OUTPUT in each instance and click configure
on the OUTPUT plugin in use for each soundcard. Make sure you don't
choose the same one in both instances of winamp.

It even works with two different soundcards.

Works under Win95/98SE and 2000.

I have tested it.
