Software / Problem with XP
« on: September 05, 2003, 01:28:46 AM »
good ol' MS kb site

original cd w/out sp1 does not make a difference, all it does is overwrite the new sp1 files with the original cd files, they would have to reinstall sp1 if their reinstall would of been successful

good luck

Software / Windows Update Problem
« on: August 31, 2003, 08:32:52 PM »
i think that error number has to do with the date on your pc.  If your pc is off by more than 100 days it will error out.  good luck

Software / Win2K Slipstream SP4 error
« on: August 31, 2003, 08:24:18 PM »
i've followed the steps on that same site and was able to slipstream sp3 on win2k pro and then sp4 on 2kpro and server.  I had no problems.  Maybe a file didnt copy correctly when xfering to your hd from cd.  Dirty/scratched original cd.  Just give it another try with a CDRW, that way you wont be making coasters.  good luck

download and install adaware, there's a good chance it will find and get rid of that surfer bar that hijacked your software

Tech Clinic / New hardware wizard in Win 2k
« on: August 31, 2003, 01:11:45 PM »
you could probably try reinstalling the software and then uninstalling it again.  Maybe this time it will take everything out.

The other option is to go to the device manager and dissable the usb device.  If it's starting the hw wizard it should still be listed there with the "?".

there is no msconfig in win2k, the only way that i access anything related to bootup is via the registry

hklm/software/microsoft/windows/current version/run

all those registry entries are your startup items.  Make sure you export the run folder in case you mess up and need to import an entry again.

hope that helped

Tech Clinic / Cant install apps in NT4
« on: August 31, 2003, 12:52:48 PM »
cjtech, thkz for reply

unfortunately I cant boot directly to cdrom.  it's a weird old workstation.  It does not have an option to boot from cd so i can install 2k directly from boot up.  The bios has various options.  One of them is formating the partition.  The other one specifically says "install windows nt", then it prompts for the nt cd, it wont accept 2k cd.

I installed sp6a for nt4.  That executable is the only one that works.

Software / I want Outlook to be the defaul mail handler
« on: August 30, 2003, 02:47:21 AM »
When I click on a link to email someone it opens up the compose new email window.  Of course, the default is Outlook Express OE, and not Outlook.  Is there any way that it can be done?  Outlook is already my default mail handler, but not in this case

Tech Clinic / Cant install apps in NT4
« on: August 30, 2003, 02:17:24 AM »
Hello everyone, 1st post....long time reader first time writer! http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />

This is my prob, I am pulling my hairs out...

Friend brought a workstation pc for me to fix up.  It's an old 500mhz, 256mb and only runs with NT4.

It's a Digital Personal Workstation 500a Model.  I've been able to find only documentations, and this site on HPwith boot files and drivers http://h18000.www1.hp.com/legacysupport/di...al/epid164.html.

I was able to install NT4 after I found those boot disks.  Now it's installed but I cant run ANY,NONE,ZIP,ZILCH,ZERO,NADA.  I get the followinge error in any executable:

===========
The image file C:\WINNT\Profiles\Administrator\Desktop\ow32enen711j.exe is balid, but is for a machine type other than the current machine [OK]
===========

That is the executable for the Opera browser, I was trying that out since I couldnt run ie6setup.exe.  It wont even run winzip.exe.

The only executable it ran was the service pack 6a file, which I downloaded and installed.

My partition is NTFS with 3.5GB left.

I even tried upgrading to Win2k but still the same error message when accessing the exe from the CD-ROM.  I even upgraded to the latest BIOS 5.68 which as per the release notes supports Win2k.  It wont even allow a clean install of 2k, it specifically asks for an NT4 CD.

Does anyone have any idea about this, please help and thanks for reading,

ceez
