Cant install apps in NT4
« on: August 30, 2003, 02:17:24 AM »
Hello everyone, 1st post....long time reader first time writer! http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />

This is my prob, I am pulling my hairs out...

Friend brought a workstation pc for me to fix up.  It's an old 500mhz, 256mb and only runs with NT4.

It's a Digital Personal Workstation 500a Model.  I've been able to find only documentations, and this site on HPwith boot files and drivers http://h18000.www1.hp.com/legacysupport/di...al/epid164.html.

I was able to install NT4 after I found those boot disks.  Now it's installed but I cant run ANY,NONE,ZIP,ZILCH,ZERO,NADA.  I get the followinge error in any executable:

===========
The image file C:\WINNT\Profiles\Administrator\Desktop\ow32enen711j.exe is balid, but is for a machine type other than the current machine [OK]
===========

That is the executable for the Opera browser, I was trying that out since I couldnt run ie6setup.exe.  It wont even run winzip.exe.

The only executable it ran was the service pack 6a file, which I downloaded and installed.

My partition is NTFS with 3.5GB left.

I even tried upgrading to Win2k but still the same error message when accessing the exe from the CD-ROM.  I even upgraded to the latest BIOS 5.68 which as per the release notes supports Win2k.  It wont even allow a clean install of 2k, it specifically asks for an NT4 CD.

Does anyone have any idea about this, please help and thanks for reading,

ceez

Try to delete your partion with NT4.0 and do not create or format a new partion. Then Install Win2k and create the partion with that and install Windows 2000 unless you want Windows 4.0. Also, what service pack do you have installed for NT 4.0? Some programs will not install if you do not have service pack 4+.

cjtech, thkz for reply

unfortunately I cant boot directly to cdrom.  it's a weird old workstation.  It does not have an option to boot from cd so i can install 2k directly from boot up.  The bios has various options.  One of them is formating the partition.  The other one specifically says "install windows nt", then it prompts for the nt cd, it wont accept 2k cd.

I installed sp6a for nt4.  That executable is the only one that works.

If you want to get rid of the old system, I have a few fun ideas on what to do with it..... it's time to act like the "mob" and give it the death it needs.

We can start off by giving it cement shoes. Fill the case with cement with all the hardware installed and see if it still starts and how long it takes to overheat. http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':D\' />

Okay, okay.  First off... the Win2k CD that you are trying to use to install with will ONLY work on x86 based platforms.  If you want to install Win2k on that box, you will need to bribe someone on the Dev Team in Microsoft to get you a copy (also, there are a few RC-1 (Build: 5.00.2072) releases floating around on the internet).  Also, make sure that you are running the latest firmware from HP (link: ftp://ftp.compaq.com/pub/softpaq/alphant/...bpw433v570.zip).  This firmware is for the 433a/500a/600a Series Personal Workstations.  The directions are in the zip file and are very helpful.  An easy way to identify the correct Win2k cd, is that you will find a folder called "Alpha" on the disc rather then the "i386" folder (and in some cases, you will find both on there).  To install the OS, you first need to setup the HDD (I would recommend using the automated option).  Once the partitions have been configured, be sure to format all of them prior to install.  Once completed, you just select the option to "install Windows NT".  If you need any software, I would recommend going to (link: ftp://ftp.alphant.com/alphant/) to get all of your AlphaNT Software Needs.  If you need more ram, check out (link:  http://www.crucial.com/store/MPartspecs.As...&WSPN=CT142822)  This box boots to it's firmware first, and not to hdd,fdd,cd-rom. <This info was posted on 28-Feb-2004>
