Software / Reinstalling XP-I have questions.
« on: March 06, 2004, 03:12:36 AM »
I'm assuming that your PC didn't come with a "restore CD". Most PC makers don't include Windows CDs anymore, but most do have an image of the OS somewhere on the hard drive that you can access with the "restore CD". You should check the support site for the PC manufacturer to see if you might be able to access the image with a floppy under dos. If you PM me I can help you get a free reinstall CD from the manufacturer, who will normally charge $10-$20 extra for this. If you harrass them enough, they'll just give it to you if you can prove ownership of the PC. I've done this before, so I can help.

Software / how i can put DIR9 in to winxp+sp1+hotfixes
« on: December 15, 2003, 01:36:17 PM »
Go to this site:
http://berns.cae.wisc.edu/pages/wincdman.asp

Download the beta version, trust me, it works beta than the earlier release. This will do all of those things, and isn't very technical as far as the person using it, but if you just want to do it and don't care too much about how this is accomplished, then this will work.

WME, do you mean wma? If it's a wma file that you're trying to burn, you'll need to get the wma plugin from the nero website. If you can't find it there, send me a PM and I'll email it to you.

Software / office 2003
« on: December 15, 2003, 01:29:43 PM »
I finally just got my copy of Office 2003. It's a legit copy, but according to the included documentation, I'm only allowed two activations. This is a problem, since I reinstall everything about once a month.

Does anyone know how to bypass the activation, or atleast backup the activation files once it has been activated?

I have found "activation cracks" on some warez sites, but they don't work, I'm assuming they were made for beta versions.

I belive that means that it\'s a Dell OEM copy of Windows 2000. In that case it\'s only meant to be installed on a PC with a Dell bios.

I don\'t think it can be done by an \"average Joe\", if done at all, considering the OS is tied to the hardware with only a few changes allowed before a \"lockout\". If it\'s totally different hardware with a different bios, I wouldn\'t count on it working.

Just out of curiousity, why not just do a clean install on the other PC? You can easily get the Volume License version and a KeyGen on Kazaa so that it appears legit.

I would never condone doing something like that, but nonetheless, it\'s an option. Or you could just get a copy of Linux and just install on as many computers as you like without upsetting Uncle Bill & Monkey Boy Ballmer.

Software / Post SP1 XP Hotfixes slipstream
« on: November 17, 2002, 07:24:17 PM »
Try this attached file \"wincdman.exe\". It will automatically slipstream the service pack and hotfixes. It won\'t, however, slipstream updates for mediaplayer, ect.

Please clarify your situation. Do you want to add programs to start at startup or stop some from startup?

One thing that I would add for anyone considering the switch to Linux, know your hardware! Especially for a home built system or a mom & pop shop system. Most PCs\' that I have seen from Dell, Gateway, Hp, ect, most of their hardware would be plug-n-prey in Linux.

What would be the point of doing so?

My understanding is that the only difference between the two is the activation. I\'m not certain that it could be done, but why would you want to? Just curious.

\"If anything run 2kpro...that is most likely to be the majorities opinion anyhow.

Now if you think about going to XP PRO...please think about other OS\'s first. There is more and more everyday. You got redhat, mandrake, suse, freebsd, solaris, lindows and many more. Don\'t forget there is other\'s but M$. And if you think about it these are free (not lindows however).

The linux distro\'s can be had for like 30-50usd WITH a book that tells you how to use it!!!!!!!!!!!!! You cant beat that. Then you can put that OS on as many computers you want...and you dont have to call Linus Torvalds to EVER!!!!!! \"

Amen, brother!

I\'ve been running Linux for about 4 months now and haven\'t run into anything yet that I could do in Windows but not Linux. Of course, there were minor problems adjusting to Linux, but nothing that I couldn\'t resolve with Google and various Linux help groups.

One more thing, I\'m sure that most people who don\'t have broadband know someone who does. Get a friend to d/l and burn a copy of a Linux distro to get a feel for it. If you like it and it works out for you, support that distro and buy a retail copy. What\'s $30 compared to the $200 that would have went to Microsoft?

\"i haven\'t figured out out to compile the kernel either i type make menuconfig in /etc/src/linux but says make is not a command? help me on those 2 things please\"

Have you made sure that you have \"make\" installed? I\'m not sure about Slack, but I use Red Hat and it\'s not part of the default install.

Software / How\'s those slipstreaming sp1 fo XP going?
« on: October 12, 2002, 08:31:46 PM »
I found a little program at Windowsxp.nu called \"WinCDMan.exe\" that will do everything for you, including post SP1 patches and even the burning process. I have the file but it\'s no longer available on Bink\'s site, atleast I can\'t find it anymore. If anyone wants it just send me an email [email protected] and I\'ll send it to you. Very simple and effective program.

Yes, you are correct, my mistake, I should have payed closer attention to the post. Most, actually all, posts regarding this that I have seen so far are referring to the Corp. version.

I do wonder if this works on the home version, though.

Change Product Key without Reinstall:
1. Run regedit and go to: HKey_Local_MachineSoftwareMicrosoft
WindowsNTCurrent VersionWPAEvents, on the right double click on
\"oobetimer\" and change at least one digit of this value to deactivate
windows.

2. Choose run from start menu and type in this command:
%systemroot%system32oobemsoobe.exe /a to get the activation screen
and go to the second option which is activate by phone
.
3. In the new screen choose the option to change product key, and type
in the new product key (Corporate one only).

4. Close that window, reboot your system and enter the command in step 2
for the second time to verify your activation , you should see \"windows
is already activated\".
