Workstation or Server OS?
« on: June 06, 2002, 02:07:16 PM »
There seems to be much experience here and I don\'t need help with too many situations, but this one I just need some advise with.
I have 5 PCs on a home network. On my \"server\" I\'m running Windows XP Pro on a Pentium 3 500 with 512mb ram. My question is, would there be any benefits to changing to Windows 2000 Server instead of XP Pro? Everything is running good as is, but I\'m just wondering if it could be faster by running 2000 server.

Thanks for any advise anyone may be able to offer.

Given the size of your \"Server\" I don\'t think you would notice any difference.  The only reason for going to 2000 Server would be if you need any of the features that are only installed with it.  I only use 2000 Server when I need to make more than 10 connections at once.  I remember a site that had some reg edits so you could establish more than 10 connections to a workstation but I think it was talking about NT4.

In short with only 5 computers and no mention of needing the advanced IIS, DHCP or other features in Server.... No.
Hope this Helps,
