Overclocking / Opinion of the people in the know.

Howzit guys,

Which make of mobo is considered the best for OC'ing? I'm looking to upgrade my Intel rig and I'm looking for advice on the right mobo for the job. Abit looks pretty good, any advice?

Thanks

Idle Chat / Cool sites, anyone?

Hi guys,

I'm looking for cool hardware, OC, gaming sites? I regularly check the old faithful ones, like Tom's Hardware Guide, Overclockers, [H]ardocp, Nvmax.com, Adrenaline Vault, etc., but does anyone know of other, regularly updated cool sites?

Hardware / ATI or NVidia - how loyal is loyal?
« on: November 28, 2003, 03:01:19 AM »
I think Nvidia has some major problems - how is it possible that the 9800 series, in general, do not require a dustbuster to cool while still delivering much better FPS and image quality?

Where I live, these cards are priced exactly the same, so the price decision does not influence the choice that much, unfortunately.

Hi Guys,

As anyone OC'ed one of these suckers? The highest I got mine was 2GHz, before the OC'ed harddisk corrupted the registry. My mobo does not allow independent setting of parameters, so if I up my FSB, everything else is upped as well. The CPU and RAM copes fine, but the ATA100 disk doesn't like it much.

Cheers.

Tech Clinic / ram problem i think???
« on: November 27, 2003, 07:52:04 AM »
I'm no expert myself, but it sounds like the RAM might be buggered. Replace the old RAM and check if the PC works. If it does, do an internet search for the serial number of the "new" RAM and check if the manufacturer rates it for the M/B of the PC.

Or just beat the hell out of the "Tech", just to be sure. The intermittent failure sounds like the RAM is not rated for the FSB of the PC?

Good luck.

Hardware / ATI or NVidia - how loyal is loyal?
« on: November 27, 2003, 07:33:25 AM »
Hello guys,

With the release of the GeForce FX 5950 and the ATI 9800 XT, it seems as if these cards represents the culmination of the AGP technology before the PCI-X cards become mainstream.

I have always favoured Nvidia cards because they were always on top of the market, being the larger of the two by far. This meant great driver support, etc. What is, however, an eye-opener is how the 9800 XT dominates the field right now!

The XT kicks the 5950's ass all over the board - Nvidia fan or not. As gamers we are very much interested in image quality, rather than balls to the walls speed without IQ. So my question is: How loyal are you? Will you stick to one hardware developer and hope that they once again come out on top, or do you go blindly to the oppositions camp?

Not having learnt the trick of sprouting money from my ears on command, upgrading a GFX card is no easy decision, and not one made yearly either. I'm planning to wait for the PCI-X train for my next upgrade. Who do you think will dominate once PCI-X becomes available? ATI or Nvidia. Or both?
