ATI or NVidia - how loyal is loyal?
« on: November 27, 2003, 07:33:25 AM »
Hello guys,

With the release of the GeForce FX 5950 and the ATI 9800 XT, it seems as if these cards represents the culmination of the AGP technology before the PCI-X cards become mainstream.

I have always favoured Nvidia cards because they were always on top of the market, being the larger of the two by far. This meant great driver support, etc. What is, however, an eye-opener is how the 9800 XT dominates the field right now!

The XT kicks the 5950's ass all over the board - Nvidia fan or not. As gamers we are very much interested in image quality, rather than balls to the walls speed without IQ. So my question is: How loyal are you? Will you stick to one hardware developer and hope that they once again come out on top, or do you go blindly to the oppositions camp?

Not having learnt the trick of sprouting money from my ears on command, upgrading a GFX card is no easy decision, and not one made yearly either. I'm planning to wait for the PCI-X train for my next upgrade. Who do you think will dominate once PCI-X becomes available? ATI or Nvidia. Or both?

I don't think we can predict anything in this field; There was a time, not so long ago, where ATI topped the market with a RAGE PRO chip, then nVidia came and dominated in its turn with the TNTs, then GeForce and culminated with the G4 4600 while ATI lagged far behind. And again the 9700 PRO came as a Saviour Of All Gamers. It's definitely not ended..

I used the Rage Pro to my delight, then a TNT2, then a .. G4MX440. http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'\' /> GFX are THAT expensive

So, let's wait and see ...

ATI for sure. Nvidia is have problems with some popular and upcoming DX9 games. No compatibility probs with ATI though. Yeh ATI's frame rates are higher.

I think Nvidia has some major problems - how is it possible that the 9800 series, in general, do not require a dustbuster to cool while still delivering much better FPS and image quality?

Where I live, these cards are priced exactly the same, so the price decision does not influence the choice that much, unfortunately.
