Hardware / Keeps turning off...
« on: March 18, 2004, 08:51:54 AM »
While one problem go away, another comes...

In the last week, I almost lost my HD. After using Powermax to phisically format it, I've recovered it. After that, installed Windows XP, completely configured it and used it for a few days... Then, suddenly, unexpectly, my computer keeps automatically turning off. At the beginning, I thought it was something about the RPC (Remote Procedure Call) and the lovesan virus. But no. It doesn't have a "modus operandi", which means that I can't determine when it will turn off: sometimes it reaches the OS and works for some minutes, sometimes it doesn't even complete BIOS reading.

I managed to configure the BIOS, to see if there were something about "Safe Temperature", or some, but no... Opened the side of my CPU, to get it colder, turned a fan by it's side. Didn't work. The highest temperature it reached was 49 Celsius. Quite cold.

I had a RAM problem recently. Decided to test. Took one of my 128 out. Didn't work. Exchange 'em. Also didn't work.

A strange behaviour: after turning off it spends some minutes then, suddenly and automatically, start over again.

I think is the Power Supply, but don't have how to test.

Any other clue?

cboy, thanks for the reply, but i've solved it already. Used Powermax, a Maxtor utility to recover HDs.

Thanks, anyway!

Hardware / CAN'T FORMAT HD
« on: March 09, 2004, 12:24:50 PM »
Hi there.

A few weeks ago I've installed windows98 in a 10GB partition on my 40GB HD. In the other partition (30GB), I've installed XP.

But yesterday it just refused to start over again. It said that file fastfat.sys has been corrupted and "the system would be no longer availabe" or some. I've managed to install the HD in another machine, backed up my data through DOS, but now it just don't allow me to format it, nor through Windows, neither DOS!

It is strange, since I can format it (through Windows) using NTFS. But I don't intend to do this, so please, help this poor stupid soul!

Thanks

Marcone
