Interesting! I just checked - its set to "automatic" i guess i have to follow those steps.

Those steps seems like a pain in the ass acutally... http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'\' />

Perhaps i'll just do what you suggested prior. and just copy and paste my files/folders onto my external...  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\';)\' />

I wanna back up my files onto my external usb drive, but each time I start up the Windows 2k back up utility i get this msg:

After that comes up and I close it it pops up the utility. So my question is.. do i have to "activate" something before i can continue with my business?  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/huh.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'\' />

In addition how the heck do I get into the Management console and start the "removeable storage" service... http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dry.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'<_<\' />

Thanks!

Restarted computer and unchecked/ applied again, then checked and applied, and it fixed it!  Hopefully I won't have to go through that again..it was super annoying. I'll post here again, if anything goes wrong.

Thanks again http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />

I checked all my settings.

The all colours thing was checked. So I UNCHECKED IT then pressed "APPLY" and all my desktop icons went crappy colour. I then RECHECKED IT, and pressed "APPLY" and they didn't change back. Which is quite strange..

Before I tried that little experiment, all my icons on my desktop were fine and only the mozilla icon was pixelized, now all of them are http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':(\' />

I'll try restarting my computer and seeing if my icons are still pixelized or if they went back to all possible colour.

Hey Olo,

OS is Windows 2000.

I always run at 1280 x 1024, however when watching movies on the TV from my computer I take it down too 1024 x 768.

According to device manager "this device is working properly" Same goes for the graphics card.

I'm using a Dell 19007FP 19" monitor. Set to True Colour 32 bit.

I downloaded the drivers from the Dell site, and installed them, everything went smoothly. But still didn't fix these issues with icons lacking colour and looking like they're in some sort of 16 bit mode... http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dry.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'<_<\' /> when it fully states that its in 32bit mode..

Alright I uninstalled the ATI software, and drivers, and then did a fresh reinstall... however.. the  wallpaper is still shrunken and icons are fuzzy. But something interesting popped up... in my properties my monitor isn't listed properly and in addition to that, its asking me to stick in the CD installation disk for my monitor. Each time i put that CD into the drive, my monitor goes black and shuts off basically.. VERY STRANGE.

I will now attempt to install the monitor drivers via the internet, instead of directly from the CD, since it seems that the PC doesn't like the disk.  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/huh.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'\' />

This is so annoying... ugh

Alright,

Whenever I watch movies on TV via the PC I have to turn down the resolution on my pc from 1280 x 1024 and go down to 1024 x 768...+ slowdown my hardware acceleration, and everything works fine. After I'm done watching, I just switch it back to the default.

The problem: I did this last night, and after I was done watching, I switched back, but noticed a couple weird things. First off certain icons from my desktop were missing : such as ( mp3's, outlook, programs, etc) But I somehow got them back on. However each time I load up mozilla now, the ICON looks fuzzy and weird.. i provided a picture below..

Why is this happening? I'm on true colour 32 bit, and everything else seems to be fine. Maybe I'm missing something..Also in addition to all this, the desktop wallpaper has shrunk so it seems..very weird. And I just realized that the other icons are missing full colour..another example is below

Hey olo, thanks for the response.. I'm running on 256MB of ram.. the C drive is on 4+ gigs and the D is on 22gigs.. So it doesn't have anything to do with that i guess.. I'm looking to speed the pc up basically.. but there seems that something got messed up with the "connections" cause i disabled zonealarm all the way back since we last talked.. and i manually start it up after desktop is done, and then without connecting to the net, "my computer" or anything else opens up fine..

But once i get connected to the net, thats a different story.. I wish i could figure out what happened with the connections.. its pretty annoying.

Thanks again

Ok, so this has been going on for awhile.. and its gotten to the point where i wanna fix it since its so damn annoying..

There's two parts to the problem.

#1.

When i turn on the computer it starts up and STALLS on "preparing network connections" for about 2mins or so... (this started a few months ago, i have no clue why, i never changed anything)

Now i googled the problem, and saw several posts about it.. but nothing that could help me. There is no network here.. its one computer, ADSL modem on a LAN connection. Thats it.

For the second problem (which is related most likely to the first)

#2

When the computer is turned on and everything gets finished loading,.. I turn on the modem and it connects after a few mins.. but IF i double click on any icon or folder on desktop... it "Stalls"

For example.. when i press "my computer" (while the modem is on right after start up) it'll stall.. and take a couple mins before it LOADS... now this happens only once after start up, later on i can click and it opens.. but if its off a brand new start up and I'm connected to the internet.. it stalls and i have to wait for it to load up, which takes several mins http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/huh.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'\' />

Now this DOESN'T happen if i just start up the computer and leave the modem turned off (which is why i know its directly associated with the internet connection)

Any possible reasons for this? Its really annoying..  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dry.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'<_<\' />

Just a quick question(out of curiosity)

Recently i stumbled upon "S.M.A.R.T" ( http://smartlinux.sourceforge.net/smart/dload.php ) and ran a check for Drive Temp. and it came up  with

Is that considered "normal" ?? 45 C seems "kinda" high.. but after researching it a little, i came across people running at 50-60C on their pc's.

Here's the log

Thanks Olo, i'll look into that. It only started happening recently... another reason for the start up to be slow could possibly be due to the little amount of space left on this pc.

The version of Zonealarm is a copy, i just used a keygen to intall the full version and register it  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ph34r.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'\' /> I've had it for a couple of years, but a few months ago it said "firewall needs update" , and so following the update it beefed up the version to 7 something.

Alright i downloaded and installed msconfig ran it and put a few checks to specific programs. What i found is that there's a problem with Zone Alarm 7 + and it slows down the speed at start up. So i disabled that and i now manually start it up. As for the CCC entries there's only one, i took a screenshot but im afraid of checking it off yet..

There isn't a big difference in start up cause i realized recently i have another problem..

When i start up windows i get snugged on the "preparing network connections" for atleast 2mins.. I don't understand why this is?

I also included a recent HJT log, perhaps that'll give some new insight  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blink.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'\' />

Well finally after installing the CCC drivers, it worked.. which is kinda funny cause with the old monitor I'm pretty sure that i only used the display driver and never had the CCC installed.

On the other hand, I tried to avoid installing the CCC and was using the display driver alone, cause I didn't have any use for the CCC one, with all the special features.. but now I'm forced to stay with it since its the only way to make my TV my secondary monitor and watch movies on a full screen.

Thanks again Olo, I should of tried that a while ago, but I just wanted to stay away from the CCC driver  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'\' />

I already installed the video drivers ie. (Display Driver Catalyst 6.2 Windows 2000) 3 times or so, and it didn't change anything. First i uninstalled using the exact instructions on the ATI site, and then re-installed them.

The 9600 Sapphire drivers ( [post=\"0\"]http://www.sapphiretech.com/en/driverfiles/298.zip[/post] )  are the same ones as the ones on the ATI site ([post=\"0\"]https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/9206/0/www2.ati.com/drivers/6-2_xp-2k_dd_30152.exe[/post]), so that doesn't help. I even tried the newest XP drivers and that didn't work either.

Im running on Win2k btw, so It makes sense the the XP drivers wouldn't work (they actually stopped me from being able to watch any video on the PC)

Ok, well I uninstalled all the ATI software and restarted.

Finally once it restarted a prompt saying "FOUND NEW HARDWARE" "Video Controller", followed by "VGA COMPATIBLE" appeared.

I haven't installed anything new recently so, i just cancelled it and went back into the control panel (add/remove programs) and searched for the "DAO"  entry, but there wasn't one. I did however get instructed to put in my "DELL INSTALLATION DISK" FOR DRIVERS and USER DOCUMENTATION". I then went ahead and installed the drivers, and got prompted to restart again.

This time the computer started up without any weird prompts, but upon going into properties and searching for the "DISPLAY" tab...it wasn't there still. I don't understand why this tab disappeared....all I'm sure of is the fact it vanished after this new monitor...

Is there any other way to detect TV? Because without this tab I'm stuck ..unless there's another way around this. There must be  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dry.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'<_<\' />
