TV connection problems
« on: May 05, 2007, 09:50:07 PM »
[font=\"Palatino Linotype\"]Ok, haven't stopped by here, hopefully Olo (or someone else) can help out.

Recently i got a DELL 1907FP and got rid of the previous crt "Sony Trinitron"

Here's the problem..

With the old Crt monitor there was a option that could "force detect" the TV connection and therefore allow me to watch movies via S-video on my TV.

Now.. following the installation of the DELL 1907FP (along with its drivers)... I recently tried to watch a movie, but to my surprise there was no tab option under properties for "force detect". ... which means no movies on the tv..

Does anyone know a way around this? The S-video cable is connected, and usually I'd just have to press force detect and the PC screen would pop up on my tv screen.[/font]

Any help please!!! Thanks http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':(\' />

I'm not sure what Video card you have
But try the following, Right click an empty spot on the desktop and select Properties

Click on SETTINGS tab
Click on ADVANCED button
On my computer I have a DISPLAYS tab, open that and select TV power button to select the TV monitor

Your selections may vary, depending on system
If I have my hotkeys enabled, I can assign a hotkey to switch among displays on the keyboard
I just use the above Display tab if the TV isn't auto detected when I watch movies from my lappy to my TV

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Yeah thats what i usually had to do, now the only option i have is.. (tab wise): General, Adapter, monitor, Troubleshooting, and Color Management. After the installation of the new DELL monitor the tabs changed for some reason and the display tab disappeared... there must be a way around this.

I have a Sapphire Radeon 9600 Atlantis video card btw... there was no problems with the old monitor... I was kind of surprised when the new DELL came with a driver-installation CD..it afterall all is just a monitor, I wasn't aware that drivers would be nessacery.

I took of screenshot so its better to understand.. maybe this will help, but you seem to understand where I'm coming from.

It may be possible that your drivers got corrupt

Can you see your Sapphire radeon driver in add/remove programs?
If you can, you could try an uninstall and reinstall
http://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894
You can get drivers from here

Thanks for the response, I tried reinstalling the driver, but I just over-writed it.

I guess I should uninstall it first then start from scratch.
I'll do that tomorrow, and write back with the progress!

3.   737-20561: Removing Old ATI Software[/quote]

Ok, well I uninstalled all the ATI software and restarted.

Finally once it restarted a prompt saying "FOUND NEW HARDWARE" "Video Controller", followed by "VGA COMPATIBLE" appeared.

I haven't installed anything new recently so, i just cancelled it and went back into the control panel (add/remove programs) and searched for the "DAO"  entry, but there wasn't one. I did however get instructed to put in my "DELL INSTALLATION DISK" FOR DRIVERS and USER DOCUMENTATION". I then went ahead and installed the drivers, and got prompted to restart again.

This time the computer started up without any weird prompts, but upon going into properties and searching for the "DISPLAY" tab...it wasn't there still. I don't understand why this tab disappeared....all I'm sure of is the fact it vanished after this new monitor...

Is there any other way to detect TV? Because without this tab I'm stuck ..unless there's another way around this. There must be  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dry.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'<_<\' />

I already installed the video drivers ie. (Display Driver Catalyst 6.2 Windows 2000) 3 times or so, and it didn't change anything. First i uninstalled using the exact instructions on the ATI site, and then re-installed them.

The 9600 Sapphire drivers ( [post=\"0\"]http://www.sapphiretech.com/en/driverfiles/298.zip[/post] )  are the same ones as the ones on the ATI site ([post=\"0\"]https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/9206/0/www2.ati.com/drivers/6-2_xp-2k_dd_30152.exe[/post]), so that doesn't help. I even tried the newest XP drivers and that didn't work either.

Im running on Win2k btw, so It makes sense the the XP drivers wouldn't work (they actually stopped me from being able to watch any video on the PC)

Try the following
I believe that the ATI Catalyst Control Center has the Video options to switch displays

You should try the drivers with CCC included (Windows 2000)
Sorry, I assumed you were running XP
Here's the link again
http://www.sapphiretech.com/us/support/drivers_viewlist.php
Don't install them yet
Take note: ensure that you have Net Framework 1.1 installed beforehand, as recommended by ATI
You can double check in Add/remove if it is or isn't
http://support.ati.com/ics/support/default...uestionID=20870

Uninstall all ATI from Add/remove programs
Reboot into safe mode

In safe mode, access Device manager>>Right click MyComputer>>Properties
Hardward>>Device manager
Expand Display Adapters, if your ATI is listed, right click on it and Uninstall it

While in Device manager, expand Monitors, remove any old monitors not in use anymore

Reboot the computer back to Normal windows
Install Win 2000 drivers
NOTE: Disable Antivirus software and any other security software ahead of time so it will not interfere with the installation

Well finally after installing the CCC drivers, it worked.. which is kinda funny cause with the old monitor I'm pretty sure that i only used the display driver and never had the CCC installed.

On the other hand, I tried to avoid installing the CCC and was using the display driver alone, cause I didn't have any use for the CCC one, with all the special features.. but now I'm forced to stay with it since its the only way to make my TV my secondary monitor and watch movies on a full screen.

Thanks again Olo, I should of tried that a while ago, but I just wanted to stay away from the CCC driver  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'\' />

It's not a bad thing having CCC installed, but on the other hand
I'm not positive if all it's features have to be running on startup
If you don't need it to run on startup you can try msconfig to disable it's startup entries

Reboot>>If you find that it causes it no problems to leave disabled on startup
We can remove those reg values permanently and you manually run it when you need CCC

Yeah thats a good idea. I agree with you aswell.
The only problem is, I'm having a hard time finding a version (msconfig) for Win2k. Any advice?

Again, I forgot you have Windows 2000, I do this all the time  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':P\' />
I have 2000 running on one of my comps
I actually use msconfig.exe from XP cause I missed it

You can get a version of it here
http://www.perfectdrivers.com/local/msconfigxp/msconfig.exe
Save it too your C:\Winnt\System32 or C:\Windows\System32 folder

EDIT>>
then go to START>>RUN>>Type in msconfig
Hit OK

Alright i downloaded and installed msconfig ran it and put a few checks to specific programs. What i found is that there's a problem with Zone Alarm 7 + and it slows down the speed at start up. So i disabled that and i now manually start it up. As for the CCC entries there's only one, i took a screenshot but im afraid of checking it off yet..

There isn't a big difference in start up cause i realized recently i have another problem..

When i start up windows i get snugged on the "preparing network connections" for atleast 2mins.. I don't understand why this is?

I also included a recent HJT log, perhaps that'll give some new insight  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blink.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'\' />

I don't think that you really disable ZA, it just looks that way
Is this the free version?

I did have the freezing at Network connections also, until I fully updated to SP4
Even then it hesitated a bit a that point before login
It was really bad when I installed an AV that messed with my Network settings
Couldn't even see other computers on my network

Even though not supported anymore, I went with the older Sygates firewall ( Shut down the automatic updater)
Take a look
http://www.filehippo.com/download_sygate_personal_firewall/
Still hesitated a couple times at Preparing network connections
That slimmed down to about 5 seconds after a few reboots
Could of been a DNS issue, I'm not sure

Thanks Olo, i'll look into that. It only started happening recently... another reason for the start up to be slow could possibly be due to the little amount of space left on this pc.

The version of Zonealarm is a copy, i just used a keygen to intall the full version and register it  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ph34r.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'\' /> I've had it for a couple of years, but a few months ago it said "firewall needs update" , and so following the update it beefed up the version to 7 something.

Well, I haven't used ZA in some time, so I can't vouch for it
A cracked copy that's causing you problems, very much a possibility
But give Sygate's a try, and clear some dead space on the drive  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />
