Software / Direct3D not working!
« on: August 20, 2008, 07:58:40 AM »
Hello,

You might remember me with the post "Computer messed up" But I got two new computer which are much better. I have a problem: I am working on the computer like usual and when I play a game the colors are all wiered and the mouse flickers. I tried playing each of my DirectX games... everyone of them had trouble, lag, flicker, colors or error messages. So I went to dxdiag. But since its in chinese, I cant read it. I went to the display tab. I am pretty sure it says disabled for all 3 tabs.... directdraw, direct3d and AGP. I can't enable since the buttons are grayed out. Test direct3d is grayed out. Go to: http://rapidshare.com/files/138740675/DXDIAG.bmp.html to see a screenshot of it I uploaded. I will also include a dxdiag log. It appears there are some registry problems and it also says "Direct3D functionality not available.  You should verify that the driver is a final version from the hardware manufacturer." But believe me I did a lot of googling and I reinstalled directx and my display driver: Matrox Millennium G400. I even did a system repair. But the problem persists!

Thanks!

Hardware / Power supply compatible?

How do you know if my computer is compatible with a certain power supply. I don't want my computer to blow up. Is there a certain voltage maximum?

Hi,

One of them is Runescape. But the CPU usage stays at 100% for all games. And I only have $10. So I am not going to buy a new computer.

Thanks!

Hi,

All I am saying is: Whenever I play a game, the CPU Usage stays at 100% and I checked the minimum requirements. If I am not playing a game, the CPU Usage doesn't stay at 100% So what should I replace to make the CPU usage NOT stay at 100% when I play games?

I don't want to make this thread 6 pages like last time either. You answer the question and we are done.

Thank-you!

P.S The post icons express my feelings.

Tech Clinic / CPU Usage 100%
« on: May 21, 2008, 03:04:39 PM »
Hi,

I simply just uninstalled Prime95. I decided that having a low CPU usage is more important than looking for mersenne prime numbers. Now the CPU usage changes not just staying at 100%. But whenever I play a game, the CPU usage stays at 100%. To make it not stay at 100% during games what would I need to change? Memory, CPU, fan...etc.

I didn't fix these yet. Just wondering what are these and why are we fixing them.

Hi,

Yes I do need those running on startup. I think I found the culprit. Prime95, if you know what that is. If I shut down Prime95, the process that take up the most CPU is System Idle Process.

Thanks!

I don't think its a virus, I think I need to update my processor thats it. But I do have 256MB of memory and the computer isn't that much faster. With the CPU Usage at 100% all the time, the computer runs slower.

Thanks

Hardware / Installing AMD Sempron Processor

Tech Clinic / CPU Usage 100%
« on: May 17, 2008, 09:38:55 PM »
I have noticed in task manager that the CPU usage is almost always 100%. It sometimes goes down to 98% but that's probably the lowest. Even after closing all programs running, the CPU usage is still 100%! The memory usage is less than half of all the memory and I have 256 MB of RAM  yet this is still happening. Since I recently updated the memory, maybe the two memory sticks isn't a good combination. I have lots of memory sticks to try maybe I should try another combination. Or maybe it is because I set the swap file size to 384 MB. If I kept the swap file size as what it was before, the total memory in task manager would probably be 40 000k. But then the low memory message would keep showing up. But I do notice there are usually three processes that are always changing and are taking up between 30-50% CPU Usage. I notice ususally Microsoft word, Internet Explorer and games take up the most memory. Usually between 30,000k-100,000k

Hardware / Installing AMD Sempron Processor
« on: May 14, 2008, 03:09:30 PM »
Hi,

The software problems are gone. Now its time to get hardware good. I have already updated the memory to 256 MB RAM. Now I have to install a new processor. First I need to know if this AMD Sempron Processor is suported by motherboard. My motherboard is Acer V75M. Then I need to know if it supports the current power voltage, dont know how to find that out. Thirdly I need to see if it supports the memory. I have two slots with 128 MB memory in each both DIMM, SDRAM. Lastly I need to know how to take off my current processor, heatsink all that and then how to install the processor with head sink all that. Believe me, I have opened the computer before, lots of times. I don't have a installation manual with it.

Hi,

This will be my last/second last post. I will address all my final notes and stuff here. Then you will make your final comments...etc. after. If you have posted a question or for whatever reason I need to add something then I will make the LAST LAST POST.

AVG 7.5 Free Edition actually doesn't take up that much RAM. It only uses a lot of RAM when updating or opening the control center. In the background AVG uses low memory. Avira used 30,000k even while the program wasn't running. Just the guard. I found out that after updating it always says, when you hover your mouse over the icon by the clock: Date of internal Virus Database is incorrect. Also the icon is black and grey. Only after the next restart it wont say that and the icon is coloured.

We have gone a long way. The computer started off not being able to copy and paste, click links, open e-mails and many other inconveniences. Then we cleared the viruses as best as possible. Finally you ended up deciding to just reinstall the computer. All the problems were fixed after that. Now we have a firewall and antivirus setup. From March 23,2008 7:45AM- April 22,2008 6:29 PM. About a month! 118 posts and still going!!

I would like to personally thank you for fixing all my problems to the point that the computer is running perfectly. As I said before ,you, guestolo, is the only one who has responded to every post. I post, you reply right away. Also this is the only forum that has actually helped me, meaning the solution actually worked!

I will get more RAM and hopefully a new computer someday! But sadly I probably won't get another computer for at least another year. Meanwhile I will try my best to keep this computer working. Go computer! Made in May 1998 and is still alive! http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'B)\' />

Don't forget to make your final comments, thoughts...etc. After that we will finally close this thread.

THANK-YOU VERY MUCH FOR ALL YOUR HELP!

Hi,

I installed AVG 7.5 Free Edition sucessfully. Then I checked for updates and got them all. After that it asked me to create a Emergency Repair Disk onto a floppy. Should I do it? It wanted to do a daily scan but I enabled it. I can't scan everyday, it will take too much memory and time. Now it says: Date of internal Virus Database is incorrect. I don't get it!

Hi,

Today I opened the computer and cleaned out the dust. I tried my best to get all the dust out from the fan and the processor. I used cloth and a mini vacum cleaner. I cleaned for almost 3 hours! I had to screw, unscrew, clean, put back...etc. I will let you know if it still restarts. All the antivirus...etc. are sucessfully installed. I am just concerned that Avira Antivirus takes up too much memory. From task manager 30,000k.

Right now here's what I have as a protection from viruses:

Sygate Firewall
SpywareBlaster
Spybot -Search & Destory
Avira Antivirus

Is it safe to start downloading now? I am considering uninstalling Avira and downloading an antivirus that uses less memory. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Hi,

I am begginning to think the restarting is more than a hardware issue. Now it is restarting particularly while playing Runescape. Ususally when it loads an ad during the game.

As for the antivirus...etc. I am downloading and installing them right now.

Hi,

I fixed the pop up problem by disabling the messenger service. The computer restarts by almost like every hour. I am almost positive that it is a hardware/cooling problem. Now all I need to know is what antivirus I should have and whatever final steps necessary. Because we should start wrapping up this post.

Thanks!

Hi,

Sometimes I get messages even while not on the Internet. It says that it wants me to go to fixmypc.com. I search it on google the site doesn't exist. It is a bit suspicious since it is telling that me that there are 100 critical errors... or something like that and I haven't installed any antivirus.
