CPU Usage 100%
« on: May 17, 2008, 09:38:55 PM »
I have noticed in task manager that the CPU usage is almost always 100%. It sometimes goes down to 98% but that's probably the lowest. Even after closing all programs running, the CPU usage is still 100%! The memory usage is less than half of all the memory and I have 256 MB of RAM  yet this is still happening. Since I recently updated the memory, maybe the two memory sticks isn't a good combination. I have lots of memory sticks to try maybe I should try another combination. Or maybe it is because I set the swap file size to 384 MB. If I kept the swap file size as what it was before, the total memory in task manager would probably be 40 000k. But then the low memory message would keep showing up. But I do notice there are usually three processes that are always changing and are taking up between 30-50% CPU Usage. I notice ususally Microsoft word, Internet Explorer and games take up the most memory. Usually between 30,000k-100,000k

I don't think its a virus, I think I need to update my processor thats it. But I do have 256MB of memory and the computer isn't that much faster. With the CPU Usage at 100% all the time, the computer runs slower.

Thanks

Do you need these running on startup?
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Google IME Autoupdater] "C:\Program Files\Google\Google Pinyin\GooglePinyinDaemon.exe"

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [BitTorrent DNA] "C:\Program Files\DNA\btdna.exe"

Go back to Task manager
Look under CPU, let me know exactly what process is using the most

Hi,

Yes I do need those running on startup. I think I found the culprit. Prime95, if you know what that is. If I shut down Prime95, the process that take up the most CPU is System Idle Process.

Thanks!

You don't need it running, unless you want it too, but it's really not needed

Appears to be an overclocking utility OR

Help Universities to find Prime_Numbers The user should decide it's participation.
Not sure if it's helpful
You decide, but I would try and disable it and see if it helps
Here's more info on either
http://files.extremeoverclocking.com/file.php?f=103
http://service.iamnotageek.com/srch-4306.html
But for now try the following

 Go to START>>>RUN>>>type in services.msc
Hit OK
In the next window, look on the right hand side for this service
name---- Prime95 Service

Double click on it--- STOP the service--If running
In the drop down menu, change the startup type to Disabled
Apply and OK out of there

Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

O9 - Extra button: Related - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINNT\web\related.htm
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Show &Related Links - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINNT\web\related.htm

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows
Including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Reboot your computer

Come back here and let me know how things are running

By the way

That's good, you want to have System Idle Process to be high, hence the IDLE
It's not being used

Hi,

I simply just uninstalled Prime95. I decided that having a low CPU usage is more important than looking for mersenne prime numbers. Now the CPU usage changes not just staying at 100%. But whenever I play a game, the CPU usage stays at 100%. To make it not stay at 100% during games what would I need to change? Memory, CPU, fan...etc.

I didn't fix these yet. Just wondering what are these and why are we fixing them.

Thanks!

I'm not going to go back and forth with this computer too much, like I said before, it's quited outdated
Don't spend too much money into it, you can get a better computer for not too much more if your to the point of installing CPU, etc....

But anyways

I have no idea what kind of games your trying to play and what the minimum specs are, so I can't help you there, keep this computer as a test box, etc..

As I said before, High CPU system idle is good, I have no idea what your saying afterwards
Please explain
If your saying System idle drops to 0% and CPU useage is 100%
Have you thought maybe your system does not meet system requirements??
Just a thought

Hi,

All I am saying is: Whenever I play a game, the CPU Usage stays at 100% and I checked the minimum requirements. If I am not playing a game, the CPU Usage doesn't stay at 100% So what should I replace to make the CPU usage NOT stay at 100% when I play games?

I don't want to make this thread 6 pages like last time either. You answer the question and we are done.

Thank-you!

Not to worry, I'm not trying to be insulting, just I guess saying, the amount of money you may have to spend to upgrade your box may not be worth it, especially with the deals online nowadays

Give me an eg.. of a game your trying to play where the CPU useage rises to 100%

Hi,

One of them is Runescape. But the CPU usage stays at 100% for all games. And I only have $10. So I am not going to buy a new computer.

Thanks!
