Tech Clinic / Win32.Qoologic.G
« on: July 13, 2005, 07:26:21 PM »
Have you received a bogus Road Runner security alert e-mail.  I think that's how my Qoologic G problems started.  The e-mail is write-protected, so it can't be deleted.  Mom didn't even open the e-mail, but it sounds like a virus gate.  Try blocking "Run a DLL as an App" from accessing the Internet via the EZ Firewall.

Tech Clinic / Some advice for victims of a beeping computer
« on: June 19, 2005, 12:11:55 AM »
Last summer, my computer would run fine, but would start maknig an annoying, siren-like beeping sound that wouldn't stop until you rebooted the thing.  It turned out the machine was having an overtemp problem because one of the fans got disconnected.

It's a good thing my mom solved the problem before the machine got cooked.

If your computer starts beeping, but otherwise is running normally, try the following:

Put a fan in back of the computer and let it (the fan) run on high.  This should reduce the occurrance of beeping.

Most computers have 3 internal fans: one for the processor, one for the motherboard, and one for the power supply.

put your hand on the back of the machine.  If it's unusually warm, you could end up having the beeping problem.

To prevent overheating:

Avoid placing the tower on the floor

Give the machine some breathing room.  Don't have the back of it right up against a wall.

Keep the inside of the machine clean.

Tech Clinic / Is my firewall thinking for itself?
« on: June 17, 2005, 10:27:19 PM »
When EZ Firewall was first installed, I was able to play games on cartoonnetwork and adult swim without any problems.  Now, I have to shut the firewall down to load games.  Since I share the computer with my mother, I've been told not to shut down the firewall.  I don't think Macromedia's being blocked because I can still play games on Disney Channel (all their games use the Flash plugin.)  Mom said she blocked a few things but doesn't remember what they were.  The firewall doesn't even display an alert when blocking the games.

We've had this machine for six years, but it upgraded in '03.

Tech Clinic / Stupid virus!!!
« on: June 17, 2005, 09:48:53 PM »
My mom and I have been having trouble with a recurring virus called  Win32.Qoologic.G Trojan.  Almost every time our machine is rebooted, A file infection dialog box from EZ antivirus shows up after Windows is loaded. I wanna know where this stinkin' virus is coming from.  My mom thinks it's coming from a bogus security notice from Road Runner.  The machine won't let her delete the email, but I don't know why.  I hope it's the email and not the games on cartoonnetwork.com.

BTW, we share a computer.
