Modem Port Help!
« on: February 28, 2002, 09:13:44 AM »
Hi,

I recently upgraded my laptop from Windws 98 to Windows 2000 Professional and now the modem has been stuck on COM 1. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can move it to its rightful place (i.e. COM 3)? I\'ve tried following the instructions in the Windows Help, but I don\'t have the option to change ports in my system tab. Under Windows 98 I could just install the modem 3 times and then delete the one\'s put on COMs 1 & 2, but Windows 2000 seems cleverer than that. It spots that there is already a modem on COM 1 & asks if I want to uninstall it first, if I chose no then the installation stops. This is driving me crazy so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your time.

Cheers,
Marc.

P.S. my modem is an ESS Data Voice Fax Modem

If your modem is com 1 now and it doesn\'t conflict with anything else and it was com 3 before , leave it as it is .
Com 1 and Com 3 are on the same serial port .Com 2 and com 4 are also on the same ( second ) serial port . If you  have an internal modem , the port can bet set by jumpers , and if the modem diagnostics find the modem , the jumpers are on the right place .

The modem is internal, although when I installed it Windows didn\'t find it, I had to install it via the \'Have Disk\' option.   I use COM1 to download photos from my camera.   Moreover, if I try and test the modem, Windows says it can\'t connect to it.

One of my housemates suggested changing the port assignments (i.e. putting the COM 3 as the serial port and COM 1 as the modem port - I\'ve no idea how to do this although it sounds like it might work?!?!)

Cheers,
Marc.

You will have to look into your instruction manual from the modem and see for which port the jumpers jumpers are set  and
eventually change them for a free port in the device manager .
You can add communication ports via  \" add new harware \", but com 1 and com 2  are usually sufficient .Some internal modems need com 3 .
