2000 or higher recovery console
« on: June 16, 2002, 07:31:15 AM »
Ok, now I found out how to install the recovery console as a bootmenu option.  winnt32.exe /cmdcons .  Now, it installs the things it needs into the dir [cmdcons].  My question is how is one able to add this as a boot recovery option on a cd?  Or, in other words.  I would like to add \"Start Recovery Console\" option to a multiboot cd.  I have tried adding just the directory along with some of the files from Twinkies site to make a bootable cd but I get an error (I messed up on the location through diskemu)  but even at the prompt, typing \"run bootsect.dat /cmdcons\"  says not found.  The run command comes from after installing, it updates  the boot.ini and adds the line \"C:cmdconsbootsect.dat=\"Windows 2000 Recovery Console\" /cmdcons\"  well, since I dont need to know what it is, I cut that out and was left with c:cmdconsbootsect.dat /cmdcons I added both the directory cmdcons and also put all files into the root, but still nothing.  To me, this would seem like a great recovery for ntfs and fat partitions without a huge footprint.  Entire dir is less than 7MB.  Also, it has a faster boot time than loading a bunch of crap.  IF anyone has any ideas on how to make this work, please reply.  I would like to add this to a multiboot cd.  Thanx

over realizing some things, I found this to be stupid, my question now is this.  There is a way to make the recovery console allow access to all folders all drives and stuff like that, but it is by editing the security policy, now, I also know there is a way, through Windows Setup to allow access to the console. My new question is this \"Do you need an installation of windows 2k to allow recover console (I dont believe so, but I know it asks me to connect to a w2k part everytime) and if not, then how would one go about editing the Security file to allow access to all folders and drives Reference website http://www.jsiinc.com/subf/tip2600/rh2615.htm

Ok, lets try this again..Basically I know you can start the Recovery Console from the start menu, but my questions are these:
1.  Do you have to have W2K/XP installed to run the RC, because it seems to me everytime I use it, I have to connect to a partition.
2.  There is a way to make the Recovery Console more useful by editing security policies of the local machine and then using the set command in RC, but it seems that w2k already has to be installed to edit policies, unless someone knows how to do this without installing w2k, maybe by editing a file like txtsetup.sif or something like that.

If this isnt understandable, I will come back in a week and explain further.  But if someone does understand, please post your replies

there really is no need to add recovery console to a multi boot cd, it is built into the w2k it self, there are t ways to access recovery console from the w2k bootup, at the welcome screen if you press F10 or press R then C and this will get you into recovery console.

i know this is not answering your question, but what you are wanting is not needed.
