How to play DVDR on DVD??

Please Help!! I burned an avi. file from my computer onto a DVDR and want to know how I can get it to play on DVD players that aren't DVDR ready?? Is there another disc I can burn it on to or I am outta luck?? P.S I'm trying to send out a video to various family members and want them to be able to play it??

first is the format of the video needs to be mpeg2 not avi, you can eihter convert to it or you can re-record in it. secondly there is dvd+r and dvd-r as well as dvd+rw and dvd-rw.  though even if you can burn all those formats there is no garuntee that the dvd player that some other family member has will be able to play any of them - which could happen with older dvd players as well as really crappy ones...
