Bypassing User/PW of WinXP Pro
« on: January 31, 2004, 12:37:55 PM »
For Years I have fixed my computers [ home network] to boot directly to the desktop thus bypassing the user/pw part. Recently one of my computers crashed and posing some problems. In fiddling around, I now have to clik ok to continue a boot to the desktop. For the life of me, I cannot recall how to make the change. Can anyone help? I use WinXP Pro ...

this may help:

open regedit and search for
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

change following values:
AutoAdminLogon: 1
DefaultUserName: (logonname)
DefaultPassword: (password)
DefaultDomainName: (name of your computer or domain)

Another easy way is to Click Start --> Run and type 'control userpasswords2' (without quotes) and hit enter. This will bring up the old Win 2k style user managment windows, which is a thousand times better that winXP's default.
If you then uncheck the 'users must enter an username and password box and click apply it will ask you for the username and password you want to automatically use. This method is safer because you don't need to screw with the registry!
