Multi-boot CD, sort of
« on: February 16, 2004, 08:39:44 PM »
Hello all

I have been playing with this multi boot idea all week.  I was trying to get Win95, 98SE, 2KPro, & XPPro all on the same disk.  I started with trying to get 2KPro to work first.  I followed the instructions by tech-hints.com and maanged to get the disk to boot up.  The only problem was I forgot to add the sp4, so it came up asking for the disk.  Not a problem, I just redone everything with the sp4 pack in it.

Now for the problem.  I tired and re-tried to creat the 2Kpro boot disk (the way I did before), but something eludes me.  I've tried it as per tech-hints procedures, tried it Bart's way, even went as far as the Nero boot CD with the win2kboot.bin, but I get the same error every time "NTDETECT FAILED".  I was burning to CDRW and testing on my spare computer (PIII 733) but I downloaded Virtual PC and am using that instead.

Needless to say, I've given up on the mutli OS boot disk idea until I get at least ONE boot sequence to work.  I searched this forum for "NTDETECT FAIL" and found only 4 instances with no real idea what the problem is.  Does anyone have any idea about this particular snag?

Thx
Raven

The NTDETECT FAIL is still going on, but I burned it to a CDRW and tried it on my other computer.  The message I get over there is "No emmulation type RAW".

Any hints?

I don't understand your problem very clearly. Maybe You can have a try to add or delete cdromsp4.tst in your disk's root menu.

The problem is that when I use the loader.bin the disk will not boot up.  When I use boot.bin, it boots fine, but I have no menu options to select from.  On the problem disk, I always get NTDETECT FAIL just after it says "Setup is deteminging your hardware congiuration" or something like that.

I have the cdromsp4.tst in the root, but I wil remove it and give that a try.  I will let you know how I make out.

now we're getting somewhere.... I found that the setupldr.bin in the I386 folder was not the same as the one in the /WPRO folder.  replaced the /WPRO file with a copy from the I386 and now it boots up.  Unfortuantly it quits at the "cannot find EULA"... but I can deal with that.

If you have update sp4 to your original win2000 disk, it will produce a file named cdromsp4.tst in the disk root. if you lost it, it will come up to ask for the sp4 disk.

maybe the file ntdetect.com in the i386 folder is missing or destroyed

Raven, you are talking the mutil boot disk or your single win2000 disk?

eula=end user licensing agreement
In my win2000 disk there is a file named eula.txt in i386 folder. Do you have it?

Raven, how did you plan to install your windows? fully unattended or user control? To try to reedit the file winnt.sif in folder i386 or the folder where you put the win2000's boot disk (same folder as setupldr.bin)

I got everything to work, but now when it starts to install, it says I'm missing a bunch of files "acgenrl.something" There must be 20 or so it can't read.  I check the orignal CD and the SP4 files, but can't find anything close that would resemble these (expected to find a "acgenrl.sy_ or something along that line).  I did manage to make a single boot disk in (unattend style) and it installs no problem.  The only files I have changed between the two disks are the setupldr and txtsetup files, and I added the cdrom*.tst and sp4 files to the root.  Perhaps I screwed up the slipstreaming of the SP4 in somw way.

At least it boots up and the NTLDR snag is gone. Now I just have to figure out why it's missing all these files.

I shall press on.

AHAH!  'I see" says the blind man....

I discovered my problem.  I let the install run, found out it was missing 33 files all together and I wrote each one of them down so I could figure out what they were.  Turns out I didn't install the SP3 or 4 properly ( dumped in wrong folder).  Reset all the service pack installs and VOILA!! it works like a charm.

Great big leanring curve here, but I got over it.
