Gateway select 1000 wint boot?
« on: April 28, 2004, 02:52:39 PM »
Hi folks,

Brother in law had his Gateway select 1000 die.
Power supply failed and was swapped for newer better item (350w).
AMD 1000mhz, 320meg ram (256 & 64)
64meg MT pc133 CL2 voltage=???
256meg Hyundai 125a (pc133??? CL=??? voltage=???)

VIA chipset on the MOBO
BIOS serial code: 62-0518-009999-00101111-091200-AMIBIOS-0AAVWP05-Y2KC-F
Ive tried finding the mobo details online but no luck.
Hoped to find others with a similar prob.

PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:
After the power supply was swapped the PC began to boot into windows XP fine but would, from time to time, pause mid boot and make a noise (faint buzzing).
No BSOD but it would be unresponsive and require Hard shutdown.

Now when the machine is switched on 1 in 10 times it will make the noise
(from I dont know where) and freeze in the bios POST section.
9 out of 10 times it will power on, do the POST test, give me the
1 Normal
2 Logged (bootlog.txt)
3 Safe mode
4 Step by Step"
menu on windows.

It can site like this for ages and be responsive but as soon as windows I choose an option and WinXP begins to boot, BUZZZZZZZZZZZ....total unresponsive lockup. No BSOD or anything.
Holding power button will restart the machine.
It can sit in the BIOS setup for ages and not screw up.
Rarely it will lockup in the setup with the faint buzzing noise.

Im guessing its the RAM, possibly a voltage difference
caused something to burn out?
If i run with just the 64 meg stick, BIOS lockups are rare.
If i run with the 256 stick BIOS lockups are slightly more common.
NVRAM check is very very slow with the 256 stick inserted.
New HD, New PSU, Graphics works ok.

I figure Windows requires RAM when working, the BIOS doesnt really. Its only when windows starts loading stuff into memory that it will ALWAYS GUARANTEE to lock up and buzz.

What could be making the faint buzzing sound?

Sorry for the long post and thanks.
