It seems that SmartSecurity has come to it's senses and made a cleaning utility that can be found here:

But i will sweep my computer for spyware anyway, i do not trust smartSecurity to clean everything they left behind...

I'm amazed that a company that defines them selfs as "Smart" would do something so stupid as to use spyware to infect computers and force users to buy there product.
Do the really think we are so dumb that we will fall for that?

Got rid of the window and ran the delete program - my pc is still running at 100% CPU - very slow to do anything - trying to print instructions from above messages to delete. The probelm is my Windows Explorer won't let me do anything keeps crashing - this is a brand new PC of a few hours - so I cannot restore since it was infected right away. Don't know what to do. Cannot open prgrams - only get on net.

As you can tell my the date of this, SmartSecurity is still out there infecting machines. I am compiling all of your letters and responses (edited, of course) and plan to turn this over to someone that can do something about this. I work for the Justice Department and suspect that I can find someway to stop these guys. Unfortunately, as we all know, it is probably coming in from outside the US and, therefore, has no controls or restraints. Please keep up the communications in this forum, you have all been helpful to me in one way or another. Thanks to all of you.

I also was hit by this evil virus. However, I think that I got rid of it. However, now when I start my computer, a box comes up with this message:

C:\\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\services\ir.exe
(Big X in a red circle) "Windows cannot find `C:\WINDOWS\System32\services\ir.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search."

(What I don't understand is that I haven't searched for this file. I mean, I'm just starting the computer so how could I have searched for it.)

After I click OK, another box comes up immediately with this message:

DESKTOP
(! in a yellow triangle) "Could not load or run `C:\WINDOWS\System32\services'ir.exe' specified in the registry. Make sure the file exists on your computer or remove the reference to it in the registry."

After I click OK on that box my computer finishes starting up. The computer seems to run alright afterward.

I'm hoping that in my fevor to get rid of the virus, I didn't remove something necessary to the running of my computer. Either way, I'd like to stop these boxes from coming up each time I start my computer.

Also, in the second box, what or where is the "registry." I suppose I could "remove the reference" in the registry, but a) I don't know where it is and

\' /> Thank You -- It worked great. It could not be removed by Spybot or Ad-Aware SE Personal. Is the reason because they are both free programs? Is there a program that would have removed it?

Thanks to all of you who have posted some type of fix to this BS problem. After reading some of the posts here, my main problem (that sorry a** background) seems to be gone. We definately need to find away to get back at not only them, but all the other companies that try and force thier services on our pc's. If anyone has any good suggestions, please let me know. I want to put a stop to anyone, or any companies that setup programs to install crap like this on our pc's. Don't they know that they can't force us users to buy thier crap!!!

I got rid of the black screen. Thanks. I went to C drive and deleted the all the files with mstask in it. Should we complain to Smart Security or something?

I picked up this piece of nastiness on Saturday, and googled my way here to this site for help. Your advice on getting rid of the desk top overlay worked great. But I'm not a techie, so I'm really, really leery of messing around in the registry. I'm even more leery of using any removal tool from that POS Smart Security itself.

At this point, with all your accumulated experience on this, do you think I can just leave it alone? (My system doesn't seemed to have slowed down, and my cpu usage is low). Or is Smart Security monitoring everything I do online? Any of the spyware programs that can take care of it? (btw, Mcafee VirusScan didn't pick it up).

I was about to type this long message of everything I did to remove this stupid Smart Security desktop when I found this. I know it would be hard for some of us to trust anything this company does at this point but I was ready to reformat anyway so I tried it and it worked. For how long I can't tell you but it looks like they have seen the error in their ways.
