How to burn DVD

Hi to everybody I now this sounds stupid to most of you but am a bit new in DVD burning, and I need your help in dealling with this.

I already download movies and I save in my own hard drive, but I want to copy to a dvd-r to be able to play in regular DVD player but most of my movie does fit in one disc.

There such thing that i can comprese my movie to be able to fit in one DVD-R or theires anyway to do this.

Please help me on dealing with this problem.
