Yesterday I installed my new Broadband software and modem. Immediately, my computer started playing-up. It will not ctrl-alt-del. The start button still works and I can open folders but when I click on “Turn Off” or “Restart” nothing happens. It won’t shut down. Sometimes even the start menu will not appear.
I could get onto the internet at first, but then after a few minutes, when I typed in a website address into the address bar, nothing happened. So I couldn’t even access Broadband Help & Support.
I uninstalled the Broadband software and then started the installation again from scratch.
But this time, at the stage where it says I need to restart the computer to complete the installation, again, nothing happens. It won’t restart, turn off or ctrl-alt-del.
Also, as soon as I turn the computer on, I get an error message: smsc.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. Blah blah blah!
I called the Helpdesk, who ironically enough, were no help at all! Said something about Welchia Worm (which one?!!?) and running the Windows XP disk to repair the system without deleting any of my files or programs.
The problems only started when I installed the Broadband software.
Can any one advise?
