Winsync[1].exe
« on: October 15, 2004, 10:07:03 AM »
Symantec idenitified that I had the winsync[1].exe Trojan Horse virus, but it failed to quarantine or remove it.  I deleted the folder and file where the virus was found, but I think it is still on my computer because the same thing happened yesterday with AIM that happened when the virus was there.  Here is my Hijackthis scan:

Hi Jessica, you didn't save hijackthis to a permanent folder

You will want to create a folder for hijackthis by following these instructions
As an Example
Open MyDocuments>>>Right click an Empty spot>>>left click NEW>>>FOLDER
Name the new folder Hijackthis
This is where you will save hijackthis.exe
Hijackthis makes backups of anything removed and if you empty your Temp folder
when applying a fix your backups will be lost

Please redownload Hijackthis from this link Hijackthis.exe
Choose Save to Disk instead of OPEN

Before posting back a new hijackthis log
Let's try some cleanup on your machine
Access your Add/Remove Programs and Remove if found, in this Order
WebSearch Toolbar
WebSearch Tools
Search Assistant
Win-Tools Easy Installer

Don't Restart your machine if your prompted until any or ALL of the above are Removed
Then RESTART your computer

After Restart, if you haven't done this already
Download these 2 spyware Removers, their both free and you should hang on to them

First Download and Install Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.05
Ensure you have this version or later
After installation-CHECK FOR UPDATES
Do a Full system scan----Remove All Critical objects by Right clicking in the box and selecting All objects
RESTART your computer to finish the cleaning process

After Restart
Download and Install Spybot S&D 1.3
After installation--SEARCH FOR UPDATES
Check for Problems---FIX everything in RED
RESTART your computer one more time to finish cleaning

After you have done the above Please post back a Fresh hijackthis log, even if you think you may be clean, there may be leftovers to take care of

Hi again Jessica, did you install spybot?
It's a great program
So is Ad-Aware, as mentioned there both free, and help to clean out a lot of junk

You can have hijackthis fix these entries, their not threats, but don't need to run on startup
Considered resource hogs, programs work fine without them

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE

Restart your computer

Can you do me a favor
Set Windows to Show Hidden Files and Folders

Navigate to this file if it exists, it should, it's in your running processes
C:\WINDOWS\system32\PRRERFC.EXE
You may see it as just PRRERFC <--I believe it's a nasty
Right click on it---left click properites and version
Do you know what it's related too

Better yet could you run it through these free online file virus scanners
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
http://www.ravantivirus.com/scan/indexn.php
Simply use the Browse button to navigate to the file
Right click on it-----Select---Submit

Let me know what you find out about it and post back a fresh hijackthis log, thanks

Jessica

I scanned that file and the site said that it was a virus, should I delete it?
I think it is a problem file, since the date on it matches the date I started having problems with my computer.

Try this Jessica

RESTART your Computer in SAFE MODE

Open your Task Manager (Hold down the CTRL+SHIFT keys and tap the ESC key)

End this process if still running
PRRERFC.EXE

Navigate to that file and delete it
C:\WINDOWS\system32\PRRERFC.EXE this file

Stay in Safe mode
Do another Scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries
and then FIX CHECKED when ALL other windows are closed

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ICQ Lite Messenger] PRRERFC.EXE

O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [ICQ Lite Messenger] PRRERFC.EXE

RESTART back in Normal mode
To help prevent spyware infecting your machine
You should install these 2 apps., they add extra security while
silently protecting you, without running in the background

SpywareBlaster by JavaCool---will block bad ActiveX and malevolent cookies
Install---Check for Updates---Enable all protection
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

IE-Spyad---IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
Here is a tutorial and download link
TUTORIAL==Link to Tutorial
Download link==Download link
Scroll down and click on IE-SPYAD.EXE Free!

With both, Check for updates every couple of weeks

Post back one more hijackthis log and let me know how things are running

If everything is running better could you please Clear your Restore Points
Simply Disable System Restore>>Restart your computer>>Enable System Restore
This will create a fresh restore point

Things seem to be running better.  I think that file was a problem, because the problem I was having kept happening even after removing all the adaware and spyware stuff.  Thanks again for the help.  Here's the updated log:
