Pop up windows after various scans
« on: November 26, 2004, 01:27:22 PM »
Hello, lately our family computer has had pop-up trouble in IE. We have Yahoo Pop-up Blocker installed, so I think it is caused by spyware. I have run AdAware and Spybot, but we continue to have problems. Here is my HijackThis log, if anyone needs it.

Could I recommend running Mozilla Firefox as a web browser instead of IE? You can find it at www.mozilla.org . It is a free, small browser and will import all your IE favorites, cookies, etc; for you. It blocks pop-ups very well too http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\';)\' />

You need to update Hijackthis, your running an outdated version
and please don't run it from the desktop
Anything removed by Hijackthis will make backups and they'll be splattered all over your screen  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':D\' />

Eg... How to make a Permanent folder for Hijackthis
Create a Permanent Folder for Hijackthis
Double Click "MY Computer"
Open your C: drive
Click "File" >>> "New" >>>> "Folder"
A new folder will be created, name it HJT

Now you will have C:\HJT

Download the newer version of Hijackthis from HERE or HERE
Save it to that new folder

Do a SCAN----Scan will change to SAVE LOG----copy and paste the WHOLE contents of the log
here... Don't try and fix anything yet----It is all important

When you post the updated log, could you also let me know the versions of Spybot and Ad-Aware

Open Ad-Aware
Click on Details---Let me know Reference Number and Internal build

Open Spybot--Click on HELP>>>About
Let me know Spybot version and Latest Detection update date

Could you also let me know the types of popups that your getting, thanks
What is advertising in them

If you don't need Kazaa starting up on startup you could access the Options and disable it on startup, this program can be started manually when needed

One other recommendation, if you don't use Viewpoint Manager
I would access your add/remove programs and Remove it
It was probably added as a result of Aim
Other users report no problems using aim when removing viewpoint manager
Here's some info from a startup list

Quote
Viewpoint Manager for Viewpoint Media Player - spyware as bundled with AOL, AOL Instant Messenger, Netscape 7, etc

If you remove it please restart your computer afterwards

I also recommend Mozilla Firefox, if you decide to install it, it's a great free browser
We should ensure we get your system clean......

Alright, I did what you asked. =)

AdAware:
Reference Number : SE1R20 25.11.2004
Internal build : 25

Spybot:
Latest Detection Update: 2004-11-18

The pop-ups are most of the time asking me to do some sort of scan, or they're advertising those "find old friends" sites. They tend to come from "z1.adserver", if that means anything.

Hi again Val, let's see what we can find on this running process if you can find it
You should
Set Windows to show Hidden Files and Folders

* Click Start.
    * Open My Computer.
    * Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    * Select the View Tab.
    * Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
    * Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    * Uncheck the Hide Extensions for known file types
    * Click Yes to confirm.
    * Click OK.

After you have done that
Access this site, give it time to load if it's busy
http://virusscan.jotti.dhs.org/

Use the Browse button and Navigate to this file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\?ttrib.exe <--file, I'm sure it's a bad guy http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />
Right click on it and click Select
Submit the file
Wait for the results and post them back here

Could you also download and save to desktop VX2 Finder
Double click to Open It
"Click to Find VX2.BetterInternet"
When it's done scanning
Click the "Make Log" button

Post back the results here

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Here is what I got after submitting the file:

Status:  POSSIBLY INFECTED/MALWARE (Note: this file was only classified as malware by scanners known to generate more false positives than the average scanner. Do not consider these results definately accurate. Also, because of this, results of this scan will not be recorded in the database.)
Packers detected:  Analyzing...

Avast  No viruses found (1.51 seconds taken)

« Reply #6 on: November 26, 2004, 09:00:13 PM »
Let's try some cleanup, thanks for the info on that file
Open Hijackthis>>Config>>Misc Tools>>Open Process Manager
Kill this Process
C:\WINDOWS\system32\?ttrib.exe

I'm going to need you to start in SAFE MODE
Ensure you know how to in advance, the link will explain
But first

Do another scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...//www.yahoo.com

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {69AD3C26-B133-789E-8477-175578807B69} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\kwoj.dll
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {6FAD372A-B565-7E9A-D02A-175578862A38} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\rjjrdvtx.dll (file missing)

Restart in Safe mode
Find and delete these files if they exist
C:\WINDOWS\system32\kwoj.dll <--file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\?ttrib.exe <--exact file name, don't delete any other file because it looks similiar

Stay in safe mode, navigate to your Temp folders and delete the Whole contents, or whatever you can, but don't delete the temp folders themselves

# C:\Windows\Temp\
# C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Profile>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\
# C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Profile>\Local Settings\Temp\
# C:\Documents and Settings\<Any other users Profile>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\
# C:\Documents and Settings\<Any other users Profile>\Local Settings\Temp\

Restart back into Normal Mode

I suggest that you download this free program
SpywareBlaster by JavaCool---will block bad ActiveX and malevolent cookies
Install---Check for Updates---Enable all protection
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
It doesn't run in the background, just run it once and Check for updates every couple of weeks

After the above is done
Could you delete your version of VX2 Finder
Download this version and run a scan
VX2 Finder 126

Post back with a fresh hijackthis log and vx2 finder log from the latter version

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Alright, done. I couldn't find "?ttrib", but in the same folder I found "attrib." I didn't do anything to the file, but I figured I should let you know.

I still see your controlling some programs from running on startup with Msconfig
or a startup manager

Good call on leaving "attrib" alone
It's legit

I see this in your log
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [McAfee.InstantUpdate.Monitor] "C:\Program Files\McAfee\McAfee Shared Components\Instant Updater\RuLaunch.exe" /startmonitor

But I don't see any Anti-Virus running in your running processes
What do you have installed by McAfee's? That is related to their security suite

I can supply with a link to a free av if you need one

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

We used to have the trial-version of McAfee's firewall and virus-scan. Maybe that's it.

What do you mean by this:
"I still see your controlling some programs from running on startup with Msconfig
or a startup manager"

I didn't see this line in your first log
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSConfig] C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\MSConfig.exe /auto

That may be an indication that you used msconfig to either restart in safe mode or control some startup entries, I was just checking

Go to Start>>>Run>>Type in msconfig and hit Enter
Put a dot in Normal Startup
Don't restart your computer yet

If your sure you know  longer use McAfee's
Which it looks like your not
I suggest that you fix this entry with Hijackthis
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [McAfee.InstantUpdate.Monitor] "C:\Program Files\McAfee\McAfee Shared Components\Instant Updater\RuLaunch.exe" /startmonitor

Restart your computer
We should get you some Anti-Virus Software on your computer

This is a great AV I use on this machine, best of all it's free
AVG by Grisoft
Includes free updates for the life of the product

After installation you should Check for updates
The first time you check for updates it may take a couple tries, after that it goes quite smoothly
Run a Full System Scan afterwards

I'm not sure what trial version of McAfee's you had running but you may want to see if it's completely removed
There may be complete instructions on their site, if you need a hand post back the version you were running

Make sure that you have XP's Firewall enabled if your not running through a NAT router

Post back and let me know how it's going after you install and run AVG if you decide to go this route
