Strange Folder Problem!!
« on: December 12, 2004, 09:21:18 AM »
I have a folder in My Music directory which is proving very difficult to delete. it was created when i extracted a RAR file (d/led from emule). on extraction two folders of the same name were created, though one had zero bytes in it and the other had the extracted files. i deleted that folder as i didn't want it but the zero byte shadow folder would not be deleted, renamed or moved. i kept getting an error message saying : "cannot delete folder. cannot read from source file or disk."

i've tried deleting in safe mode, from command prompt, even from command promt after shutting down explorer.exe to no avail. i've tried using MoveOnBoot (utility to move/delete/rename folders and files)  but it too has failed. i've scanned with norton anti-virus, used spybot S&D, scanned and defragged the drive but nothing seems to work. the folder just won't be deleted. i've also done a system restore but of course that didn't work either.

even stranger:

while trying out different things i moved another file into the problem folder and, lo and behold, ANOTHER identical folder was created with the moved file in it. the zero-byte folder remained as it was. i deleted the second folder easily and THIS time the zero byte folder could be deleted BUT when i closed and re-opened the window to My Music, the persistent folder had reappeared. it seems to have got a life of it's own.

I suspect that the original rar file was suspect. it had EMG Elite in its name (hacker groups?).

All I want is to be rid of this folder without having to format my h/d.

Running WinXP SP2 on a P4 with 512 RAM

yes...i've deleted the original rar file from the emule folder.

now here's something even stranger..

after trying out a lot of stuff i managed to delete the whole My Music folder..WITH the problem folder in it.

NOW the My Music folder and the pesky undeletable folder won't get emptied from the recycle bin. here comes the funny part: when you look at the recycle bin properties it's got 0 bytes with no files and folders in it!!

realllly weird i tell you.

Send a blank txt document to the recyle bin and then try emptying the whole recycle bin

EG>>Right click an empty spot on the desktop
Left click NEW>>Text Document
Name it and delete it

I too have a folder in My Music that cannot be changed
It came in when I tried to make MP3s from a Disney Audio CD
for my wifes iPod.  (bought legally) I am angry that the music industry is forcing software into my computer with no warning.   This has got to be
illegal - there is no warning on the CD.    If you hear of any
solution I would love to hear from you.  alieninjapan at Email Removed

This is a last resort technique that works most of the time. I don't use SP2 but
it should work with it as well. You do have to use caution and follow the directions.
1 - Start> run> type in "cmd" without the quotes.
2 - In the cmd mode, change your directory to the one where the folder or file is
located.
3 - Press Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring up Task Manager
4 - Find and end all instances of explorer.exe in Process folder.
5 - Ignore what is happening to your desktop and use your mouse to return to the
Cmd window.
6 - Windows no longer has control and you can delete what you want.
7 - Return to the Task Manger window and move to application tab.
8 - Click New task button and type in explorer.exe.

You folders should be gone and you are back in windows.

OR

click the folder to rename it, and at the end where the space is, delete/backspace the "space" and

HOLD the "ALT" button and type 255. That is the ascii code for a blank. it should have made a blank, hit enter to complete the rename... and then delete that biatch http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\';)\' /> ... you might have to do it the above way though, I can't remember, its been a while since I fixed mines...

Good Luck.
