Please look at my log file
« on: December 13, 2004, 04:12:33 PM »
Well, I am currently in way over my head, but here is what I know.  My desktop is now covered with a black advertisement for some spyware stuff and I can't get it to go away.  I have a subscription to Norton Anti-Virus but it never will let me update the definitions, after I download them it just says "updating".  My computer has really gotten slow also.  I just updated Spybot and deleted all the new stuff that it found but it didn't solve any problems.  So I found Hijack this and used it so here is the list:

Sorry I didn't see your log earlier

Could you please post a fresh hijackthis log if you still need a hand

And also
Can you Download DLLCompare

Start the Program and click the Run Locate.com
Default settings should work---C:\Windows\System32 directory
Let it complete the SCAN, which won't take long

Click the Compare button to start the next process. This will take a bit longer.
The results appear in two panes - files in the upper pane have been verified to 'exist'.
Files in the lower pane were 'not able to be accessed'.
Very few files should be listed in the lower pane,if any, when the Compare scan is complete.
Click on each of the listed entries in the lower pane to select them. Right-click on the file and use the option Rescan. This will cause Windows Find to see if the file does exist, and then if so it will be removed from the list to reduce the number of identified files.

Click the Make a Log of what was found button

Post this log too, thanks

Also let me know where the advertisements are coming from....
What Spyware Company?

Hey desertracer, I'll be checking in later
But for now
I need you to disable WinPatrol's protection until after we're done with any fixes
You can reenable it later
But it may interrupt any fixes that we try

RESTART your computer to ensure it's disabled
If your not sure how to disable it, or if it doesn't have an option to disable it
Go to START>>>RUN>>type  in msconfig and hit Enter or OK
Under the Startups tab uncheck
C:\PROGRA~1\BILLPS~1\WINPAT~1\WinPatrol.exe
Remember to restart and don't disable anything  else on startup

Back in Windows

Download and Install the free version of Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.05
Ensure you have this version, or the Professional series
Open Ad-Aware, ensure to click the  check for updates online link and Connect to download the latest updates
Perform a Full system scan
When it's finished scanning
At this point you should either right click on the screen and and choose the "Select All" Objects option or individually put a checkmark in each objects checkbox
click on the Next button. Ad-Aware SE will now present you with a confirmation box as to whether or not you would like to remove the objects you have just selected. Press the "OK" button

RESTART your computer again to finish the cleaning process

When your back in Windows
Hijackthis has just recently been updated, can you update your version
Open Hijackthis>>Config>>Misc Tools>>Check for updates online

Or download the latest version from HERE or HERE

Save to your
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\My Downloads\hijackthis folder and allow it to overwrite the old version

Post back with a log from this version after you have done the above, thanks
I do see a couple problems in your log that need fixing

Also, please update Hijackthis as I clearly instructed, thanks

Post back a Fresh Hijackthis log after you have updated it

Well, I thought I did everything you asked, the new AdAware found 316 items that I removed.  I downloaded the new hijack, but evidently my shortcut took me to the old version and I didn't realize it.  I will uninstall it and try to download the new one again.

Okay, here is the logfile from the new Hijack:

Let me know who your Internet Service Provider is
It's not ThePlanet.com Internet Services is it?
Doesn't look right

I'm asking because of this entry in your log
O15 - Trusted IP range: 67.19.185.246

Actually, by looking at your log, also just verify if your provider is
Colorado SuperNet

Hi again desertracer, log is looking better, except for this line

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:9022

Did you purposely set up your Internet to run throught a proxy server?

If you didn't could you have hijackthis fix checked that entry with all other windows closed

Restart your computer, if you have any problems later you can restore that entry with hijackthis in the backups section

Is there a reason your so far behind on windows updates?

You should install this free apps. adds extra security while
silently protecting you, without running in the background

SpywareBlaster by JavaCool---will block bad ActiveX and malevolent cookies
Install---Check for Updates---Enable all protection
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
Just run it once and check for updates every couple of weeks
After every update enable all protection

Can you post back one more hijackthis log after you have removed that entry and installed SpywareBlaster

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Follow the instructions posted http://www.thetechguide.com/forum/index.php/topic/22942-please-read-how-to-post-logs-from-frst/\'>Click Here

We should disable System Restore and restart your computer to clear all your restore points--reenable it again at system startup, this will create a fresh restore point

This is to ensure that you don't restore any Nasties
1. Right click the My Computer icon on the Desktop and click on Properties.
2. Click on the System Restore tab.
3. Put a check mark next to 'Turn off System Restore on All Drives'.
4. Click the 'OK' button.
5. You will be prompted to restart the computer. Click Yes.If not prompted, restart anyways

6.Reenable System Restore when your back in Windows
Note: To re-enable the Restore Utility, follow steps one to five and on step three remove the check mark next to 'Turn off System Restore on All Drives'.

Along with having SpywareBlaster to help prevent future attacks
You should also visit Windows updates and get the latest Critical updates(High Priority)
and Service Packs
If your not ready to install Service Pack2 at this time
I recommend it, but I like to have the user run Online Virus scans
Clean out all the Temp folders
Make sure all your Device drivers and software programs are updated

If your not ready for the above, at minimum you should Install Service Pack 1a
This includes needed Security patches for your system
Here's a link
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloa...p1/default.mspx

You really need Windows updates to keep secure, this also updates IE security fixes

Let me know how everything is running

Okay, thank you very much for your help.  I already had system restore turned off, but I didn't even know that it was there.  Nothing seems to have changed, my computer is still running pretty slow (it takes about 5 seconds to open My Compter), and I still have the black thing covering my desktop.  Somebody told me I shouldn't download the updates, that is why I am behind, I will download the service pack right now.

I didn't realize you still had that problem, sorry

Check out that TrendMicro link first

If you need a hand with the procedure let me know, I'll put it a little more clearly

We should also get you to run an Online virus scan at Trend Micros

Deleting the Dropped Files

Using Windows Explorer, locate and delete the following files:
• %Windows%\desktop.html
• %Windows%\SSICO.ICO
• %Root%\Documents and Settings\<current user>\Desktop\! Protect Your Data.url
• %Root%\Documents and Settings\<current user>\Favorites\! Smart Security.url
• %Root%\Documents and Settings\<current user>\Recent\! Smart Security.url
• %Root%\Documents and Settings\<current user>\Start Menu\! Secure Yourself.url

I don't know how to find any of thses files.

I'll type it up a little clear, just give me a second
If you have trouble deleting any of the files try it in safe mode
Or I can have you do it with Hijackthis, let me know

Just a couple of minutes and I'll edit this post

Set Windows to Show Hidden Files and folders
* Click Start.
    * Open My Computer.
    * Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    * Select the View Tab.
    * Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
    * Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    * Uncheck the Hide Extensions for known file types
    * Click Yes to confirm.
    * Click OK.

Right click the START button and Left Click Explore
Navigate to these files and delete them
C:\WINDOWS\desktop.html <--this file
C:\WINDOWS\SSICO.ICO <--file
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\! Protect Your Data.url <--file
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\! Protect Your Data.url <--file
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Favorites\! Smart Security.url <--file
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Recent\! Smart Security.url <--file
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Start Menu\! Secure Yourself.url <--file

Log off your current user or Restart your computer

Post back and let me know how you make out
Then Install Service Pack 1a if everythings fine, or better yet take the online virus scan at Trend Micros and then install the Service Pack

Were you able to delete the key in the Windows Registry?

YOU ARE THE MAN!!!!

Yeah, I was able to delete the file using regedit.

But in the Explorer I couldn't find the files that I was supposed to delete, so I searched for them, and was able to find and delete the first two, but could not find the others.

But the black thing covering my desktop is now GONE!

I am now on my way to Trend Micros and then the service pack.

Good work desertracer, I would definitely take the online virus scan

Make sure to reenable system restore once your done

Let me know if Trend Micros finds anything, if it does and it can't remove something
Save the log that Trend Micros produces and post it here with a fresh hijackthis log

You may also want to check for those files to delete in any other user accounts on your machine, if any

Where were those files located that you did find and deleted?
You may also want to use the search feature and enter these, just in case

Smart Security.url
Secure Yourself.url
