Need a few tools

Download and UNZIP to a folder Hoster by Toadbee

Set Windows To Show Hidden Files and Folders
    * Click Start.
    * Open My Computer.
    * Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    * Select the View Tab.
    * Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
    * Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    * Uncheck the Hide Extensions for known file types
    * Click Yes to confirm.
    * Click OK.

PRINT the rest of this out or save it to a Notepad file on the desktop
Restart your computer into SAFE MODE

Access your Add/Remove programs and Remove if found
Bargain Buddy
BullsEye Network
Navisearch

Also going to ask you to Remove Messenger Plus 3
When you installed it, it came bundled with Spyware called LOP

Don't worry, if you want it you can Reinstall it, but Choose not to Include the SPONSOR <<<this is what installs the crapware
Uninstall it for now>>>leave it removed until we have your system clean

RESTART your computer back to SAFE MODE  if Anything removed
Please remove MSN PLUS for now!!!!

Find and delete these files and folders if they exist

C:\WINDOWS\System32\emsutwh.exe <--file
c:\windows\system32\rk.exe <--file
c:\windows\system32\mmsystem.dll <--file

c:\windows\rundll32.exe <--file, Careful, only delete the one in the Windows folder, don't touch the one in the System32 folder
c:\windows\system32\explorer.exe <--file>>Careful again, ONLY delete the one in the System 32 folder, NOT the one in the Windows folder>>Opposite folder of the last one

C:\WINDOWS\system32\msbe.dll <--file
C:\WINDOWS\zeta.exe <--file

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Jump Free Trans Surf <--this folder
C:\Programmer\BullsEye Network <--folder
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\pure plus long chic <--folder
C:\Programmer\Messenger Plus! 3 <--this folder
C:\Documents and Settings\Rasmus\Application Data\INSIDE~1 <--this folder, not sure of the exact name but it starts with INSIDE

Stay in safe mode
Do another scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

That looks better, good job

Some final cleanup

Open Notepad (START>>>RUN>>>type in notepad) hit Enter
Copy the contents of the Quote box to notepad
In Notepad click FILE>>SAVE AS
IMPORTANT>>>Change the Save as Type to All Files.
Name the file as zesoft.reg
Save this file on the desktop
This will help clean zesoft from your registry

Quote
REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_ZESOFT][-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ZESOFT]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum\Root\LEGACY_ZESOFT]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\ZESOFT]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet003\Enum\Root\LEGACY_ZESOFT]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet003\Services\ZESOFT]

Double click on zesoft.reg and allow to merge

Do another scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - _{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows, including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
YES and exit Hijackthis

If everything is running better
you should disable system restore---restart your computer--enable system restore
This will clear all your restore points and ensure you don't restore any nasties
Once reenabled it will create a fresh restore point
How to Disable and Re-enable System Restore feature

Once back in Windows and System Restore is reenabled

You should set up protection against future attacks

SpywareBlaster by JavaCool---will block bad ActiveX and malevolent cookies
Install---Check for Updates---Enable all protection
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

IE-Spyad---IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
Here is a tutorial and download link
TUTORIAL==Link to Tutorial
Download link==Download link
Scroll down and click on IE-SPYAD.EXE Free! or IE-SPYAD2.EXE Free!

Regular IE-Spyad for the individual user or IE-Spyad 2 for global protection(All users) on your computer
You only need one or the other

With both, Check for updates every couple of weeks
Keep the link to IE-Spyad bookmarked so you can check for updates
SpywareBlaster, after every update just simply enable all protection

Clean those Temp folders, you should regularly(At least once every couple weeks)
If you would like to try this free utility to do it for you
Download and Install this small program
to help clean your temp folders, cookies, prefeth folder, etc...
Windows Cleanup
Open Windows CleanUp,
Click the CleanUp button, let it finish scanning for files and then Log off and back on
or Restart your computer

Post back One more Hijackthis log, let me know how everything is running
I want to see if that R3 entry is gone, thanks

Hi there, I was reading all of the comments of you carefully:

I got the same Problem with an Windows 98 Plus PC, start the PC, then just got the background, no desktop symbols, no toolbar, etc.

System is infected with funny.exe Virus.

if I start the PC in safe mode, message: file p....dll is missing.

I tried command prompt: c:\scanreg and restore the *.cab file from a date when it worked properly. Didn't help, still the same problem.

What to do now? some next steps, ideas?

Can you give me a link to one of these sites
Did you install SpywareBlaster and/or IE-Spyad?

Just for test purposes can you go to
Housecall's Online AV
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Choose your area and see if the ActiveX and definitions will load
You can even run an online virus scan if you would like  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':P\' />
I'm actually asking you to try to go to Housecall's because if there ActiveX will load
I would say that the other sites your trying to access, trying to load the activex component may be bad sites
I'm not sure
We might have to adjust your Security settings in IE's Internet options

I'm really not sure what exactly your saying, this is an active x issue, right?

Access your Internet options via Control Panel
Under Security>>Custom Level

Make sure that these are set
Download signed ActiveX controls (Prompt)
o Download unsigned ActiveX controls (Disable)
o Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe (Disable)
o Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins (Enabled)
o Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting (Prompt)

By the way, from the Tutorial for IE-Spyad it only adds reg. entries to your
Registry
Nothing to run in the background
By default when IE-Spyad is installed it will install to C:\IE-Spyad

Navigate to that folder, this is where you unzip any updates too
Remember to Uninstall and Install after every update
That link to the Tutorial is quite good in explaining the procedure

Very sorry to hear you deleted IE-Spyad
If you use Internet explorer it's a great silent spyware blocker

That is up to you

Ensure at minimum you have Spyware Blaster installed and updated
And enable all protection

Thanx for posting back

psapi.dll & funny.exe
« Reply #38 on: July 28, 2005, 01:47:07 AM »
hi there
I had the same problem(I can't see desktop icons and startupmenu  at start up) some days ago. There is a process named mxz.exe which is the main part of the funny.exe virus. After many trial the following steps helped me to start my pc again.

-Restart the pc in safe mode
-You will see the funny.exe file creates many files with a long name and with extension .exe and .dll. in different folders. What i did is I searched all the files and deleted from the different folders.
The virus uses long digits to file names. each number has two file names with dll and exe extensions. for example 225586499866.dll and 36754688888.exe . And another files are created with the following file format "dll_22596136876.dll"

What you have to do is delete the files from the following folders

* before deleting the files make sure that ur windows explorer is  configured to show all the files.( windows explorer-tools-folder options-view tab-select show hidden files and folders)
* While deleting the files, make shure you haven't selected other system files, this may create another problem
* While deleting, dont send them to recycle bin, directly delete them(shift+delete)
here are the list of folders

c:\documents and settings\username\desktop (use this path rather than directly using desktop)
c:\windows    or c:\winnt
c:\windows\system
c:\windows\system32
c:\windows\msagent
c:\windows\inf
c:\windows\java
c:\windows\shellnew
c:\windows\temp
c:\documents and settings\user\localsetting\temp

also delete the following files from windows folder
    mxz.exe
    fun.exe

use windows search system to find funny.exe file and delete it.

If there is a folder which the files are not deleted, the system will again create all the files in the different folders. THEREFORE make shore that you have deleted all the files befor restarting.

if you have the same problem after restart, all the files are not deleted. So revise all the folders.

try the above method and tell me the result please
 Good luck
