Internet Exporer
« on: December 27, 2004, 07:29:15 AM »
I need some advice. I reinstalled WindowsME on my computer and now the Windows Explorer won't display web sites. I can connect to the internet with no problem but when I open Windows Explorer nothing connects. Only a page saying the page cannot display. I'm sure there is probably a simple setting I must change. Can anyone help?

Thanks! http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dry.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'<_<\' />

One thing you may try
Go to Start>>Run>>Type in
winipcfg /release  <--notice the space between g and /

Then hit OK
Restart your computer

Next: Go to Start>>Run>>Type in
winipcfg /renew then hit OK

Does that help you out?

It may be spyware related, not sure
Can you Download Hijackthis 1.99
A small utility to see if any Hijackers, Malware, Spyware, etc.....Reside on your computer

Important: Create a Permanent folder for Hijackthis
Double Click "MY Computer"
Open your C: drive
Click "File" >>> "New" >>>> "Folder"
A new folder will be created, name it HJT

Now you will have C:\HJT

Download Hijackthis from HERE or HERE
Save it to that new folder

Do a SCAN----Scan will change to SAVE LOG----copy and paste the WHOLE contents of the log
here... Don't try and fix anything yet----It is all important

If you can't download on the computer with problems, download it to a floppy on another and copy it over to the other computer
Do the same thing in reverse to post the log

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Follow the instructions posted http://www.thetechguide.com/forum/index.php/topic/22942-please-read-how-to-post-logs-from-frst/\'>Click Here

I can see your problems Jim, I'm sure we can get you back online

Could you Access your Add/Remove Programs and remove
New.net Application or New.net Domains

I would also recommend that you remove
MYWAY--MYWay Search Bar or similiar
Acts almost like Spyware and may cause Internet slowdowns

RESTART your computer after removal

If for some reason it won't remove or it isn't present
Can you download this uninstaller and save it to a Floppy
New.net removal[/URL] <Link Removed
If your using IE you will have to Right click on the link and Copy Shortcut
Paste it into your IE address bar and hit GO

Once it's saved to the disk
#  Insert the floppy disk into the floppy drive of the computer that needs to have the software uninstalled from.
# Click on Start.
# Click on Run.
# In the Open window type, A:\uninstall6_38.exe.
# Click on the OK button.
RESTART your computer

Can you get online?
If you can post back a fresh hijackthis log for some additional cleaning
If not, can you download and save to a floppy
LSP fix.exe
Transfer LSP fix to the infected machine
Double click to run it
Let me know what you see in the KEEP side
also let me know what you see on the REMOVE side
Click the X button to exit out

Post the findings along with a fresh hijackthis log, thanks

I really appreciate your help.

But I still can't get the EI to go online. I access through t-online and that connection is fine. I guess this is a bigger problem than I thought.

I'm using a different computer to communicate with you now.

As you will see, it is late where I am and I must get up early tomorrow. I'm going to bed now but I'll check in the morning. Thanks for your help!

Jim

http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':D\' /> Great News! It worked!

After I removed the extra programs you suggested and rebooted, IE was up and running again.

THANKS!!!

Even though it's fixed, here is the info you requested (this was gathered after the fix). If there is anything else that you think needs cleaning out let me know.

Thanks again!

Hi again Guestolo-

I have another computer, my laptop.

If you have time to look, I have run the hijackthis and the LSP.

Is there anything you advise me removing that is harmful or unnecessary?

(I have removed my name from a couple of places in the info)

Thanks!

Hi Jim, just on my way to bed
I'll look at both of your logs as soon as I'm off work
Your first log still needs some cleaning so I will call that Log1

Your last log you posted needs cleaning also. We will call that Log2

Both logs shouldn't take too much too finish cleaning

I'll post fixes to both of them tomorrow evening, my time
Need some sleep right now  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':P\' />

Bill in Canada  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':D\' />

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Hi again Jim, let's try this
On both computers could you first download these 2 free spyware removal tools
Yours for free and hang onto, there both very good programs

You may want to Print out these instructions, one of your logs I will need you to restart in safe mode
I would also recommend that once you have the below Spyware Removers installed
and updated you disconnect from the Internet

Both computers,
Download and Install the free version of Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.05
Ensure you have this version, or the Professional series
Open Ad-Aware, ensure to click the  check for updates now link and Connect to download the latest updates
Don't run a scan yet

Both computers,
Download and Install Spybot S&D 1.3
When Installing, please don't enable TEA TIMER, it's a great addon to Spybot but it can get in our way to do any manual fixes.. This can be enabled at a later time if you want it
After installation--Click the Update button on the left, in the window on the right-- click the  SEARCH FOR UPDATES button, Check and download all updates
Don't run a scan yet

On both computers, Set Windows to Show Hidden Files and folders until we are done
Set Windows to Show Hidden Files and Folders

After you have both of the above programs downloaded and installed and updated

Log 1

Do another scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

O16 - DPF: {11111111-1111-1111-1111-111111113457} - file://c:\ied_s7m.cab
O16 - DPF: {11111111-1111-1111-1111-511111113457} - file://c:\x.cab
O16 - DPF: {11111111-1111-1111-1111-511111113458} - file://c:\x.cab

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows, including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
YES and exit Hijackthis

RESTART your computer
Find and delete these files and folders if they exist
c:\ied_s7m.cab <--file
c:\x.cab

C:\PROGRAM FILES\SEARCH-ASSISTANT <-folder
C:\PROGRAM FILES\WINDOWS SERVEAD <--folder

Navigate to and delete the Whole contents of your Temp folders, or delete whatever you can, but DON'T delete the Temp directories themselves
C:\Windows\Temp
C:\Windows\Temporary Internet Files

Open Ad-Aware
Perform a Full system scan
When it's finished scanning
At this point you should either right click on the screen and and choose the "Select All" Objects option or individually put a checkmark in each objects checkbox
click on the Next button. Ad-Aware SE will now present you with a confirmation box as to whether or not you would like to remove the objects you have just selected. Press the "OK" button

RESTART your computer to finish the cleaning process

Back in Windows:
Open Spybot---Click the "Search and Destroy" Button
In the right window, click the
Check for Problems Let it complete it's scanning---Ensure to check and FIX everything in RED---they should be checked by default

RESTART your computer to finish the Cleaning process

Stay in safe mode and run a Full System Scan with Ad-Aware
Restart your computer---you can restart to normal mode at this time

Open Spybot and run a scan with the directions above
Restart your computer to finish the cleaning process

Hi Bill,

THANKS for the help. I did everything.

The file you asked about was called 'services'

Should I resent my computers to hide hidden files and system files?

Here is the info from Hijackthi.

Hi Jim, I'm not signed in right now because I'm not at my own comp

Log2

We still have some cleaning to do
With computer no. 2 Windows xp

Do another scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {15EF836F-4182-1F50-FD79-1B943F9BDFB4} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\tgdtd.dll

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Jjtlc] C:\WINDOWS\System32\r?ndll32.exe

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows, including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
YES and exit Hijackthis

RESTART your computer into SAFE MODE
Find and delete these files if they exist
C:\WINDOWS\System32\tgdtd.dll <--file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\r?ndll32.exe <--file, exact name
Let me know if you can find r?ndll32.exe
Could you also look for rundll32.exe, don't delete it, but let me know how many you have in the System32 folder---there is a legitimate rundll32.exe
If more than one, one may not be a nasty

RESTART back into Normal mode and post another hijackthis log from LOG 2

On Both Computers:

To enhance your privacy and security
You should set up protection against future attacks

You should install these 2 apps., they add extra security while
silently protecting you, without running in the background

SpywareBlaster by JavaCool---will block bad ActiveX and malevolent cookies
Install---Check for Updates---Enable all protection

IE-Spyad---IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
Here is a tutorial and download link
TUTORIAL==Link to Tutorial
Download link==Download link
Scroll down and click on IE-SPYAD.EXE Free!

With both, Check for updates every couple of weeks
Keep the link to IE-Spyad bookmarked so you can check for updates
SpywareBlaster, after every update just simply enable all protection

I forgot that you said there is a file you found called
services.exe
There is a legitimate services.exe
You will have to right click on the file and left click properties
Let me know file size and date created
Under version tab, does it have the Microsoft copyright

Do the same for rundll32.exe
Don't delete these files, they may be legit

One last time, I hate not being logged in

You see this in your running processes
C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe
That is  a legitimate file

The ?? marks that you see in the log will probably not display like that in the System32 folder
Just look for something that is close
Don't assume it's bad unless you find the exact file name
EG.... r?ndll32.exe

Hey I was logged in, I guess I remembered the right password  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':D\' />

Hi Bill,

I ran the scan and deleted the files suggested.

I could not find:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\tgdtd.dll <--file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\r?ndll32.exe <--file, exact name
r?ndll32.exe

I found one file named rundll32.exe

Also, I messed up yesterday and deleted the file  service.exe

Thanks.

Good Work Jim, everything looks clear

On both computers, if everything is running better
You Should Disable System Restore, Restart the computer, Then Enable System Restore
This will clear all you restore points and create a fresh restore point
Don't want to Restore any Nasties
Link will show you how if you need it
http://vil.nai.com/vil/SystemHelpDocs/Disa...eSysRestore.htm

Good going on getting SpywareBlaster and IE-Spyad

In addition
Hold onto Ad-Aware and Spybot
Check for updates every couple of weeks and run scans
Ad-Aware--you can just run a Smart System Scan, it's quicker
Run a full System scan once in awhile

Spybot---You may also want to use the Immunization feature for a little added protection
Simply click Immunize>>OK>>Immunize at the top

Clean out those temp folders every couple of weeks http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':P\' />

If you haven't done a disk defragment in a while on both computers, now would be a good time
On windowsME you may want to run a Scandisk first
I like to do this in safe mode

Stay safe Jim
and Happy New Year  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':D\' />
