popup and spyware problem
« on: January 03, 2005, 03:49:24 PM »
Hi all,
I recently inherited a computer at the office. On performing a regular cleanup operation I saw that lot of unidentified processes are clogging up memory. I have generated the following log:

Reply in a few minutes, be right back

I need you to download a few free tools, yours to hang onto
Let's see if we can get some of this mess cleaned up  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\';)\' />

First, can you download and save to Desktop the Standalone version of CWShredder.exe
Don't run a scan yet

Download and Install the free version of Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.05
Ensure you have this version, or the Professional series
Open Ad-Aware, ensure to click the  check for updates now link and Connect to download the latest updates
Don't run a scan yet

Download and Install Spybot S&D 1.3
When Installing, please don't enable TEA TIMER, it's a great addon to Spybot but it can get in our way to do any manual fixes.. This can be enabled at a later time if you want it
After installation--Click the Update button on the left, in the window on the right click the
SEARCH FOR UPDATES button, Check and download all updates
Don't run a scan yet

Another great utility to help clean your temp folders, cookies, prefetch folder, etc...
Windows Cleanup
A small download, once it's installed
Don't run a scan yet

Instead
You may want to print the rest of this out or save it to a Notepad file on the desktop, ensure that the above spyware removal tools are up to date

RESTART your Computer in SAFE MODE

Open CWShredder and click the FIX button, let it fix everything it finds
Restart your computer back to Safe mode when it's done

Open Ad-Aware
Perform a Full system scan--"Uncheck Search for Negligible Risk Entries" before scanning
When it's finished scanning
At this point you should either right click on the screen and and choose the "Select All" Objects option or individually put a checkmark in each objects checkbox
click on the Next button. Ad-Aware SE will now present you with a confirmation box as to whether or not you would like to remove the objects you have just selected. Press the "OK" button

RESTART your computer back into Safe mode to finish the cleaning process

Open Spybot---Click the "Search and Destroy" Button
In the right window, click the
Check for Problems Let it complete it's scanning---Ensure to check and FIX everything in RED---they should be checked by default

RESTART your computer to finish the Cleaning process

Open Cleanup and click on the Cleanup button
Let it finish scanning, when it prompts you to log off and on
Could you at this time restart back into Normal mode and post back a fresh Hijackthis log
We'll manually clean up the rest after that

Do as much of the above as you can before posting back
Let me know if you could do everything

Hi Again,
Based on your directions I was able to complete all the required tasks. But I am a bit confused about the windows cleanup thing. Everytime I run cleanup I see it shows some new entries and says that after logging back in cleanup should complete. But I never see the screen/process after restart.

Want to know if there is still anything left.

Here is the updated log:

Looking better still some work to do

Access your Add/Remove Programs and remove if found
I'll assume you want to clean right up, so some are optional but definitely recommended
You can install them at a later time
Many are Malware
NCase
180 solutions or 180 Search assistant
Internet Optimizer
Kontiki
PalTalk or NetPal
Any Wild Tangent Entries
P2P Networking
Unneeded addon usually installed by Kazaa, can cause system slowdowns
If Prompted to Remove Altnets, do so

Also, if you didn't pay for Easy Erase Spyware Remover I would uninstall it too
It's on the Rogue list, take a look
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm

RESTART your computer if anything is Removed
Back In Windows

Open Notepad (START>>>RUN>>>type in notepad) hit Enter
Copy the contents of the Quote box to notepad
Click File>>save as
IMPORTANT>>>Change the Save as Type to All Files.
Name the file as search.reg

Save this file on the desktop, well need this later, don't run it yet
This will restore your default urlsearch settings

Quote
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL\DefaultPrefix]@="http://"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL\Prefixes]
"ftp"="ftp://"
"gopher"="gopher://"
"home"="http://"
"mosaic"="http://"
"www"="http://"

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\URLSearchHooks]
"{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497}"=""

Open Notepad (START>>>RUN>>>type in notepad) hit Enter
Copy the contents of the Quote box to notepad
IMPORTANT>>>Change the Save as Type to All Files.
Name the file as Zesoft.reg

Save this file on the desktop, well need this later, don't run it yet
This will remove the Zesoft  entries in your Services

Quote
REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_ZESOFT][-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ZESOFT]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet003\Enum\Root\LEGACY_ZESOFT]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet003\Services\ZESOFT]

You may want to print the rest of this out or save it to a Notepad file
Disconnect from the Internet

Open Hijackthis>>Open Misc Tools section>>Open Process Manager and Kill any of these processes still running
C:\WINNT\System32\lnkay.exe
C:\WINNT\lwhanen.exe

what should I do about them?

And lastly In the new Highjack this log that I have posted I noted that there is still a reference to Kontiki through Cnet (check :

What should I do about this?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Don't run away, let's clean the rest of this out right now
I'll post back in a few minutes

Do another scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [cnet] "C:\Program Files\Kontiki\bin\kontiki.exe" -s cnet -q

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows, including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
YES and exit Hijackthis

Restart your computer
Delete this folder if you haven't done so already
C:\Program Files\Kontiki

Yes, you can delete those files in the prefetch folder, however
 Windows CleanUp!
Should of taken care of those files in the prefetch folder
You probably searched for them before running Cleanup
You can check out the options in CleanUp and uncheck Prefetch
Clean out the prefetch about once every couple of months
But clean out those temp folders with cleanup once every couple of weeks
By the way, you won't see the final cleanup process when it asks you too log off and back on, it does it with Explorer shut down

You should install these 2 apps., they add extra security while
silently protecting you, without running in the background

SpywareBlaster by JavaCool---will block bad ActiveX and malevolent cookies
Install---Check for Updates---Enable all protection
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

IE-Spyad---IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
Here is a tutorial and download link
TUTORIAL==Link to Tutorial
Download link==Download link
Scroll down and click on IE-SPYAD.EXE Free! or IE-SPYAD2.EXE Free!

Regular IE-Spyad for the individual user or IE-Spyad 2 for global protection(All users) on your computer
You only need one or the other

With both, Check for updates every couple of weeks
Keep the link to IE-Spyad bookmarked so you can check for updates
SpywareBlaster, after every update just simply enable all protection

If that Kontiki entry doesn't come back your log looks good
How's everything running?

EDIT>>>If everything is running smooth now you should disable system restore---restart your computer--enable system restore
This will clear all your restore points and ensure you don't restore any nasties
Once reenabled it will create a fresh restore point

Here's a link, just in case your unsure how to  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'\' />

Looks good Ashkay
Forgot too add, hold onto Ad-Aware and Spybot

Check for updates every couple of weeks
Run a scan if there's an update

Ad-Aware>>You can use the Smart System Scan, it's quicker
Do a full system scan once in a while

Spybot>>You may also want to use the Immunization feature for a little added protection
Simply open Spybot>>Click on Immunize>>OK>>Immunize at the top

I don't usually add this as a protection tool, but because your user name is asquare
You may want to check out this free tool too check for trojans and malware
This is an option, up to you, but it's free
It's only because of your username, but I have it on my computer, I run scans with it once a month
a-squared Free
If I remember correctly, just scroll down to the bottom and click the link to asquared free
When registrating supply them with a legitimate email address
After installation ensure to check for updates and run a scan
As I said, totally optional, up to you
